The college basketball season is in full swing, and Nick Makowitz is guiding you through each conference and giving you the best bets to make. Here, we look at a preview of the AAC Conference.

Houston Odds to Win the AAC Basketball Championship
Sportsbooks certainly believe Houston will win the AAC fairly comfortably. It has the highest implied win probability of any high-major conference favorite and for good reason. Houston made a run to the Elite Eight last season despite losing two of its top players in Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark. Now, both players return healthy and make the Cougs’ roster arguably better than it was a season ago.
Kelvin Sampson’s teams always play with a nearly unmatched tenacity, and this team will do the same, except it will have more natural offensive scorers to take some pressure off the defense. As the preseason odds-on favorite to win the national title, Houston should be able to handle the AAC with ease, barring any injuries.
Can Anyone Besides Houston Win the AAC Basketball Championship?
In short, no, but if someone’s going to, it would be Memphis. The Tigers lost a good bit of talent to the NBA and the transfer portal, but Penny Hardaway added a transfer of his own in Kendric Davis. Davis, who played for conference-rival SMU the last three seasons, gives Memphis an elite scorer and lead guard who could help break through a tough Houston defense when the AAC’s top two teams square off. Hardaway’s squad did knock off Houston twice last season by double-digits, although Houston got its revenge by pounding the Tigers in the AAC Conference Tournament Championship game.

Best Bet to Win the AAC Basketball Championship
- None
It wouldn’t feel responsible to advise anyone on a best bet when I wholeheartedly believe Houston will cruise through the AAC and deep into the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars are such big favorites in the conference that, if you like them, you’re probably better off taking a position on their national championship odds.
