Multiple times each week, FTN Bets’ resident college basketball junkie, Brad Evans, will attempt to posterize the ‘books with his favorite selections, whether sides, totals, teasers or parlays. As always, fade or follow Brad’s picks — fading is encouraged — that’s up to you.
2-leg alternative line parlay play: Syracuse (+10.5), Texas Tech (+5.5) (Tipico)
Odds: +125
Leg 1: Syracuse (+10.5) at Virginia
On the curmudgeon scale, Jim Boeheim registers a Coach K-level rating. When it comes to media sessions, his soul is filled to the brim with bitterness. He, however, has to be pleased with his current product on the court. Back to .500 in ACC play after consecutive triumphs over Miami and Virginia Tech, the ‘Cuse is once again taking up residence in an all too familiar place, Bubbleville. Due to the remarkable two-way play of Illinois transfer Alan Griffin, deep cylinder splashes from Joseph Girard and paint punishment doled out by Quincy Guerrier, the Orange is starting to galvanize at the right time. Virginia was pushed to the brink by Georgia Tech last Saturday, bombarded repeatedly from three, but it was bailed out by Sam Hauser’s own perimeter blitz. Syracuse, whose 2-3 zone is predictably bewildering the opposition by allowing 25.0 percent along the arc in ACC action, is an unattractive matchup for a Cavs team that tallies 37.3 percent of its points from distance. If Guerrier and Marek Dolezaj hang tough inside against seven-footer Jay Huff, they should remain competitive in what will undoubtedly be a limited possession and tortoise-paced contest.
Leg 2: Texas Tech (+5.5) at West Virginia
Featuring more slashers than Wes Craven’s movie catalog, Texas Tech often leaves the opposition bloodied and wounded. An impeccable 3-0 in true “road” games this season, upending the likes of Texas and Oklahoma, Tech takes down the competition with a mixture of strong basket takes, free-throw conversions (24.3% of its points) and collapsing interior defense (45.9 2PT% D No. 1 in Big 12). To spring the upset in Morgantown, the Red Raiders must extend and clamp down along the perimeter. WVU, thanks in large part to the sweet stroke of Miles McBride, has shot a net-blazing 39.2 percent on threes, the highest mark in the Big 12. Also highly reliant on second-chance opportunities, the Mountaineers may not have the luxury of winning the boards. Kyler Edwards and Marcus Santos-Silva routinely wipe the glass. Toss in WVU’s inconsistency at the free-throw line (67.4% in Big 12) along with its leaky interior defense and Chris Beard’s club could again resemble ultimate road warriors.
Season record: 10-16
