We will recap betting trends from last season, list projected starters, preview the season and talk about any key players for that program.
The ACC is home to some of the most storied programs in the history of college basketball. Lately, the Final Four champion has come out of the Big East or the Big 12, but the ACC has a great chance to reclaim the title of the best conference in CBB. There has been an influx of talent via the transfer portal, good old fashioned recruiting and the additions of SMU, Stanford and Cal.
Let’s take a look at the SMU Mustangs.
2024-25 College Basketball Season Preview: SMU Mustangs
Conference: ACC
Head Coach: Andy Enfield (1st season)
2023-2024 Record: 20-13
ATS: 14-17-1
O/U: 14-18
Projected Starters: G Boopie Miller, G Chuck Harris, G BJ Edwards, F Matt Cross, C Yohan Traore
SMU enters the ACC era with new head coach Andy Enfield and a conglomerate of intriguing transfers. Enfield and his staff have always been able to bring in high-level talent, but that hasn’t always translated to positive results on the court.
Enfield landed Boopie Miller (15.6 PPG at Wake Forest), Matt Cross (15.3 PPG at UMass), Yohan Traore (14.5 PPG at UCSB), AJ George (10.6 PPG at LBSU), Tibet Gorener (11.4 PPG at SJSU), Kario Oquendo (7.2 PPG at Oregon) and Jerrell Colbert (2.6 PPG at Kansas State) via the portal, which is an impressive collection of players for Year 1. Holdovers Chuck Harris, Keon Ambrose-Hylton and BJ Edwards will also heavily factor into the rotation.
Key Player: Boopie Miller
With leading scorer Zhuric Phelps gone, Wake Forest transfer Boopie Miller steps into an ideal situation where he will be the focal point of the offense. In a charity exhibition against Oklahoma State, he scored 14 points while pulling down 7 rebounds and dishing out 3 dimes. He has averaged double-digit points in all three of his collegiate seasons and has shot just under 37% for his career from long distance. He is the type of player who can carry a team for long stretches and will thrive in Enfield’s system.
