2024-2025 College Basketball Preview: Colorado Buffaloes

Share

Check out our entire college basketball season preview!

The college basketball season is less than three weeks away, and here at FTN Fantasy we have you covered for what promises to be another thrilling year of upsets and incredible finishes. I will be taking you around the country with a betting preview of the major conferences. I recap the betting trends from last season, list projected starters, preview the season, identify a key player, and reveal how I’m backing or fading each team.

Let’s start with the best conference in college basketball, the Big 12. Last season, the conference added four new teams in Houston, BYU, Cincinnati and UCF. This year, the conference expanded to 16 teams, with Arizona State, Utah, Colorado and Arizona bolstering an already-elite conference. The Big 12 says farewell to Texas and Oklahoma, who are now in the SEC.

Let’s take a look at our betting preview for the Colorado Buffaloes.

2024-2025 College Basketball Season Preview: Colorado Buffaloes

Conference: Big 12
Head Coach: Tad Boyle (15th season)
2023-2024 Record: 26-11 (12-8)
ATS: 20-17
O/U: 22-15
Projected Starters: G Julian Hammond III; G Andrew Crawford; F Trevor Baskin; F Andrej Jakimovski; C Elijah Malone

It was a magical year for Colorado, earning the most wins (26) in head coach Tad Boyle’s tenure. The Buffaloes reached the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time under Boyle, earning a play-in game victory over Boise State and an upset of No. 7 Florida, before succumbing to No. 2 Marquette in a close second-round battle. Colorado enjoyed offensive talent and disruptive length on defense, with versatile players such as Tristan da Silva and Cody Williams. However, this certainly projects as a rebuilding year for the Buffaloes with only 19.4% of their minutes returning.

Colorado was in the Big 12 for several years, including Boyle’s first season in 2011. They return after 13 years in the Pac 12 and are predicted to finish 15th out of the new 16-team conference. The only team with fewer votes than the Buffaloes is Utah, also a newcomer to the Big 12. The Buffaloes will build around three transfers in Trevor Baskin (D2), Elijah Malone (NAIA) and Andrej Jakimovski (Washington State). Certainly, this is a huge dropoff in talent from last season. Julian Hammond will take over the backcourt duties as a senior but has never averaged more than 7.4 PPG in his three seasons with Colorado.

Key Player: Andrej Jakimovski

Someone needs to lead this team, which makes the 6-foot-8 Jakimovski from Washington State the best choice. The Cougars’ 25-win season was based on solid defense and versatile offense, with Jakimovski as a key contributor. He posted 12 games of four or more 3Ps made, while averaging 5.6 rebounds and two stocks per game. He is the best all-around player on the roster.
