2024-2025 College Basketball Preview: Butler Bulldogs

Share

Check out our entire college basketball season preview!

The college basketball season is less than three weeks away, and here at FTN Fantasy we have you covered for what promises to be another thrilling year of upsets and incredible finishes. I will be taking you around the country with a betting preview of the major conferences. I recap the betting trends from last season, list projected starters, preview the season, identify a key player, and reveal how I’m backing or fading each team.

Let’s continue with the Big East, home of the two-time defending national champion Connecticut Huskies. This 11-team conference plays its conference tournament in the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden in New York City. While UConn has won two straight NCAA Championships, there has been a new regular-season conference champion in each of the past four seasons. The Big East is one of the few conferences that did not expand or contract, relying on its rich history and elite level of basketball that started 45 years ago.

Let’s continue with our betting preview for the Butler Bulldogs.

2024-2025 College Basketball Season Preview: Butler Bulldogs

Conference: Big East
Head Coach: Thad Matta (3rd season)
2023-2024 Record: 18-15 (9-11)
ATS: 14-18
O/U: 13-17-2
Projected Starters: G Kolby King; G Landon Moore; F Pierre Brooks; F Jahmyl Telfort; F Patrick McCaffery

Butler has a chance to take a big step forward in 2024-2025. They return over 57% of their minutes from last year, a rarity in the transfer era. That includes their two leading scorers in Pierre Brooks (14.8 PPG) and Jahmyl Telfort (13.9 PPG). Head coach Thad Matta added three transfers in Maryland’s Jaime Kaiser, Iowa’s Patrick McCaffery and Tulane’s Kolby King. They will supplement a large returning bench, battling for the three available starting spots. Each of their reserves flashed but failed to provide consistent contributions. A prime example is sophomore Finley Bizjack (4.2 PPG), who posted 19 points in 19 minutes against Marquette. The Bulldogs added two freshmen in Evan Haywood and Colt Langdon, but their impact is likely longer term.

Key Player: Pierre Brooks

Brooks is a strong 6-foot-6, 240-pound forward who greatly improved his 3P shooting (40.6%) last season. He posted 20 or more points in seven games, including three straight contests in the middle of January. He and Telfort are the best players and leaders of this team. Their ability to draw the defense will open scoring opportunities for shooters such as Landon Moore and Kolby King.
