The college basketball season is less than two weeks away, and here at FTN Fantasy we have you covered for what promises to be another thrilling year of upsets and incredible finishes. We will be previewing each team from all of the major conferences along with some mid-majors as well. We will recap betting trends from last season, list projected starters, preview the season and talk about any key players for that program.
The ACC is home to some of the most storied programs in the history of college basketball. Lately, the Final Four champion has come out of the Big East or the Big 12 but the ACC has a great chance to reclaim the title of the best conference in CBB. There has been an influx of talent via the transfer portal, good old-fashioned recruiting and the additions of SMU, Stanford and Cal.
Let’s take a look at the Boston College Eagles.
2024-25 College Basketball Season Preview: Boston College Eagles
Conference: ACC
Head Coach: Earl Grant (4th season)
2023-2024 Record: 20-16
ATS: 16-20
O/U: 21-15
Projected Starters: G Chase Kelly, G Dion Brown, G Roger McFarlane, F Elijah Strong, F Chad Vennings
The Eagles overachieved last year with a 20-win season and an appearance in the round of 16 in the NIT. It’s hard to imagine they match those meager results in 2024-25, though, as their roster was depleted by graduations and transfers. Quint Post, Jaeden Zackery, Claudell Harris, Mason Madsen, Prince Aligbe and Devin McGlockton are gone, which is essentially all of their scoring from last season.
The additions include Dion Brown (19 PPG at UMBC), Roger McFarlane (14.8 PPG at SE Louisiana), Chad Venning (13.4 PPG at St. Bonaventure) and Josh Beadle (3 PPG at Clemson). Returning players Chas Kelly (3.7 PPG), Elijah Hastings (2.7 PPG) and Fred Payne (1.6 PPG) will be thrust into much larger roles.
Key Player: Dion Brown
Brown broke out as a sophomore with UMBC where he averaged 19 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 2.6 APG and 1.3 SPG. He started all 32 games last year while shooting 50.6% from the field and 76.1% from the charity stripe. Results can be a mixed bag when it comes to players transferring from a low-major up to a power conference but there is reason to believe Brown can be successful. He scored 28 points against Louisville last year and delivered a 13 point/7 rebound/3 assist stat line against Maryland. There will be some intriguing prop-betting opportunities for him this year.
