Pittsburgh Pirates senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said that right-handed reliever Dauri Moreta (elbow) is in the "side" portion of his rehab from Tommy John surgery. Moreta is making good progress but still is unlikely to pitch in any Grapefruit League games in spring training. Meanwhile, fellow pitchers Sean Sullivan and Yerry Rodriguez are dealing with right-elbow discomfort in camp. Sullivan is playing catch but won't pitch in any spring games, while Rodriguez is seeking a second opinion. The 28-year-old Moreta had TJ surgery last March and was placed on the 60-day injured list last weekend, which means he won't be able to make his 2025 debut until at least late May. Moreta had displayed a strong 31.8 percent strikeout rate in 2023 and could be an option for high-leverage spots in Pittsburgh's bullpen down the road in 2025.

According to Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pirates right-handed pitcher Dauri Moreta (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list. This transaction opened a spot on the 40-man roster for outfielder Tommy Pham. Moreta underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2024 and is still expected to miss time in the 2025 season. Given that he underwent the operation early in the 2024 campaign, Moreta could have a path to being available for most of the second half of the season. During the 2023 season, the 28-year-old held a 3.72 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP across 58 innings. He tallied an impressive 79 punchouts but showed weak command of his pitches as he held a 10.0 percent walk rate. However, he did generate a strong 3.02 xERA, which suggests he should face some positive regression when he returns to the mound. When he does return to action, he could earn a high-leverage role in the bullpen.

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Dauri Moreta (elbow) underwent UCL surgery on Thursday and will miss the next 14 to 16 months. Moreta injured his right elbow earlier this spring and will now miss all of the 2024 season. There's a chance he won't be ready for the start of the 2025 campaign, either, depending on how his rehab goes. The 27-year-old Dominican reliever appeared in a career-high 55 games out of Pittsburgh's bullpen in 2023 and had a 3.72 ERA (2.93 FIP), a 1.09 WHIP, his first career save, 24 walks and a career-high 76 strikeouts in 58 innings pitched. Moreta has pitched to a 4.32 career ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 38 walks and 119 strikeouts in 100 innings pitched for the Bucs and Cincinnati Reds in his three big-league seasons.
