Baltimore Orioles right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras cleared waivers and will begin his campaign with Triple-A Norfolk. Last season, Contreras spent time with several clubs. He logged 68 1/3 cumulative innings at the major league level. Across this stint, Contreras posted a 4.35 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP. He tallied 56 punchouts and served up walks at a high 10.4 percent rate. He also generated a poor 4.94 xERA and a .260 xBA, which placed him in the 12th and 20th percentile, respectively. In spring training, Contreras posted a 6.75 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP across eight innings of work. Fantasy managers should expect Contreras to open the season in the starting rotation in Norfolk. He could eventually return to the majors when Baltimore needs additional pitching depth.

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Roansy Contreras is reportedly going to be stretched out as a starting pitcher this spring. The 25-year-old began his career as a starting pitcher with the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, Contreras transitioned to a bullpen role with the Los Angeles Angels last season. The O's could use the starting pitching depth, but Contreras still has an outside shot at making the starting rotation. There's a chance that he wins a role as a swingman out of the bullpen to begin the season.

Right-hander Roansy Contreras is on the move again after the Baltimore Orioles announced on Friday that they claimed him off waivers from the New York Yankees. Contreras has now been claimed on waivers five times this offseason, with this being the second time Baltimore has scooped him up. In corresponding moves, the O's designated outfielder Daz Cameron for assignment and outrighted infielder Luis Vazquez to Triple-A Norfolk. If the 25-year-old Contreras doesn't make the Orioles' big-league roster out of spring training, he'll have to be exposed to waivers yet again since he's out of minor-league options. The Dominican hurler was once a top-100 prospect with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a starter, but he has since transitioned to a relief role and posted a 4.35 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and two saves with the Pirates and Angels in 2024 in 68 1/3 total innings.
