Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy indicated on Tuesday that right-hander Tyler Mahle (shoulder) is likely done for the remainder of the 2024 season. With the Rangers out of playoff contention in September, they aren't going to bother having Mahle try to build himself back up after landing on the injured list on Aug. 20 with right-shoulder stiffness. The 29-year-old spent most of 2024 trying to make his return from Tommy John surgery. He managed to make only three starts (12 2/3 innings) for Texas and was predictably shaky, allowing seven earned runs on 14 hits (one homer) while walking four and striking out 10 against the Astros, Red Sox and Twins. The Rangers are also shutting down fellow right-hander Jon Gray (foot) for the rest of the year due to a neuroma in his foot. Mahle was looking solid for the Twins early in 2023 before he needed TJ surgery, so perhaps he can bounce back in 2025.
Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said the team is putting right-hander Tyler Mahle (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with right-shoulder stiffness and activating right-hander Jon Gray (groin) from the 15-day IL in a corresponding move. Mahle returned from Tommy John surgery recently but only was able to make three starts for Texas before landing back on the shelf. The 29-year-old allowed seven earned runs on 14 hits (one homer) while walking four and striking out 10 in 12 2/3 innings in those three starts. It's unclear if Mahle will be able to come off the IL when he's eligible. In the meantime, Gray figures to fill Mahle's spot in Texas' starting rotation and is worth a look for starting depth in mixed leagues to close out the year. With Max Scherzer (shoulder) and Jacob deGrom (elbow) also returning soon, Mahle may not have a rotation spot to return to when he's healthy.
Texas Rangers right-hander Tyler Mahle (elbow) made his first start of the season on Tuesday night vs the Houston Astros. He was quite effective, allowing one earned run, five hits, and two walks while striking out two over five innings. Mahle threw 49 out of his 76 pitches for strikes. Mahle signed with the Texas Rangers this past offseason and has been recovering from elbow surgery. The 29-year-old righty has a career ERA of 4.28 and WHIP of 1.30 in 640 2/3 IP. Throughout his career, he has been a reliable back end of the rotation starter and should remain as such for the remainder of the season. He is available in 80% of Yahoo! fantasy baseball leagues, but that number may get much smaller pretty quickly after Tuesday's performance. Mahle will look to build on Tuesday's outing in his next start on the road Monday against the Boston Red Sox.
