Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Frankie Montas declined his portion of his $20 million mutual option for the 2025 season on Monday to officially become a free agent. The Brewers also claimed right-hander Kevin Herget off waivers from the New York Mets and claimed left-hander Rob Zastryzny off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Montas will receive a $2 million buyout and is now free to sign with any team. The 31-year-old veteran began the year with the Cincinnati Reds before being traded to the Brewers at the deadline. The Dominican hurler went a combined 7-11 with a 4.84 ERA (4.71 FIP), a 1.37 WHIP, 148 strikeouts and 66 walks in 150 2/3 innings over 30 starts after missing pretty much all of 2023 due to injury. He was slightly better in 11 regular-season starts for the Brewers and will be hoping to take that momentum into 2025.

Montas had an inconsistent regular season with the Reds and Brewers, going 7-11 with a 4.84 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP, and a 22.6% strikeout rate in 30 starts and 150 2/3 innings pitched. The 31-year-old faced the Mets once this season in his last start, allowing two runs on two hits (including a home run) and three walks with six strikeouts through four innings. The Brewers kept Freddie Peralta on a short leash in Game 1's 8-4 loss, so it would not be surprising if they treated Montas the same.

Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Frankie Montas was excellent on Thursday, tossing six shutout frames against the San Francisco Giants in a 3-0 win. Montas allowed just two hits and two walks while punching out eight Giants. The veteran might be hitting his stride at the right time, as he now has back-to-back quality starts with a combined 18 strikeouts in 12 IP. He has only allowed four hits and five walks in those starts. He is currently in line for two starts next week, but they are against the Phillies and D-Backs, two very tough matchups. He is only a desperation streamer.
