It’s been a little bit of a slow start to the college basketball season for me. It feels like you will never have easier wins or worse losses than you do early on in the season, because everyone has the same amount of information on the sport. As we get more games, I feel like both sides of the equation sharpen up and there’s less lines to take advantage of. It’s a decent slate Wednesday, so let’s try to pick out a winner or two.

Record: 3-4

All odds are per DraftKings Sportsbook.

Richmond at Boston College

7 p.m. ET
BC -5

This game will tell us a lot about the Spiders, who have coasted to two easy home victories against VMI and Siena, who are 331 and 327 in KenPom’s rankings. Richmond lost a lot of talent in the offseason, but adding Jordan King and DeLonnie Hunt have boosted up their offense quite a bit. The team’s bench is a little bit of a concern, but the pace of the game should allow the starters to stay in a little longer. BC is also 2-0, but they are coming off a 75-71 road win at The Citadel that was highly uninspiring. Earl Grant has his team playing at his pace and that will keep the underdog in it longer. Quinten Post was in foul trouble last game and his battle with Neal Quinn will help determine the winner. If Quinn has some issues, a live bet on the home team might be in play, but pregame I’m leaning to the underdog here.

The Pick

Richmond +5

FIU @ Houston Christian

8 p.m. ET
FIU -14

It’s a weird travel spot for the Panthers, who hit the road 48 hours after a very tough 86-80 loss at Miami in which they were up 12 with 16 minutes left to go. FIU’s other losses were 85-62 at UCF and 82-65 at home against Tarleton State. Offense is not an issue for this bunch, but as usual they just can’t slow anyone down. Houston Christian has played just one game, and it was a 110-63 loss at BYU in an 81-possession contest. These two played last year, and it was a 77-66 game at FIU that opened up the season so I’m guessing the rustiness of the start of the year was the culprit. The Huskies at home in non-conference last year played games with scores of 90-84, 84-77, 93-83 and 95-82. Only one starter is back, but both teams should have solid opportunities to get to the basket.
