Other Notable Bets to Consider
- Myles Garrett had 16 sacks last season and a career-high 60 total tackles. It was the fifth year in a row the Pro Bowler ended up with double-digit sacks.
- T.J. Watt won this award in 2021 after being a finalist for it in both 2019 and 2020. Injuries slowed him down last season, but the Steelers linebacker has been in the mix often and is a former winner. When he is healthy, he has dominated.
- If you are looking for a longshot play, reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Sauce Gardner is interesting. No other DB has better odds than him to take home the award. Sauce is as high as 20-1 on BetRivers to start the season, but also as low as only 11-1 on BetMGM. The last cornerback to win the award was Stephon Gilmore in 2019. The only other corner to win the award this century was Charles Woodson back in 2009.
NFL DPOY Odds Movement in 2023
- May 24, 2023: The top three have not really seen a lot of movement, but we have seen some wild swings from players behind them at 10-1 or better. Sauce Gardner is a guy we mentioned already. He is down from his opening number on a lot of sportsbooks. Former winner Nick Bosa is also a great value here. He opened higher as well but has already taken some money. Eagles young rush specialist Haason Reddick has gone in the wrong direction. After opening at around 20-1, he has seen his price drift up a bit in recent days.
History of NFL DPOY Winners
Here are the last 10 NFL DPOY winners:
Year | Player | Position | Team |
2013 | Luke Kuechly | LB | Carolina Panthers |
2014 | J.J. Watt | DE | Houston Texans |
2015 | J.J. Watt | DE | Houston Texans |
2016 | Khalil Mack | DE | Oakland Raiders |
2017 | Aaron Donald | DT | Los Angeles Rams |
2018 | Aaron Donald | DT | Los Angeles Rams |
2019 | Stephon Gilmore | CB | New England Patriots |
2020 | Aaron Donald | DT | Los Angeles Rams |
2021 | T.J. Watt | LB | Pittsburgh Steelers |
2022 | Nick Bosa | DE | San Francisco 49ers |
Aaron Donald and the Watt brothers have dominated this award over the last 10 years. Guys who can rush the passer tend to be the ones who end up at the top of this list, so it is no surprise. We have only seen one defensive back win the award in the last 10 years, although the decade before that saw a few safeties like Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu take it home. If you are looking for the most likely winner, it probably comes from a guy who can rack up 20 sacks this season. Not that a defensive back or middle linebacker can’t win it, but it would probably be a combination of a truly dominant season from one of them and a lackluster year from the pass rushers in the league.
