July is almost upon us, which means things are going to start heating up for the NFL. With just over two months from the start of the season, we still have plenty of opportunities to get some futures wagers in play.
In terms of the current betting markets over at Tipico Sportsbook, here of some of the top bets I’m targeting right now.
Offensive rookie of the year: Trey Lance +650
The masses continue to sleep on Lance, so we should keep hammering this bet. Lance isn’t a guarantee to be the starter right from the gate, but history has shown us that top-five picks typically don’t get out of September before assuming starting duties. Lance is reportedly getting an opportunity to compete for the starting job in camp. That’s unlike fellow rookie Justin Fields, who Bears coach Matt Nagy has continually said would not start to open the season. Lance is a special talent who has the passing ability of a traditional quarterback but also possesses a running back-like skillset on the ground. He has the chance to make special things happen in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
Comeback player of the year: Carson Wentz +1000
The notion that Wentz is a broken quarterback is largely overblown. Sure, he was not good last season for the Eagles, but we should take into account the overturned trash cans he played behind along the offensive line. Philly’s line was decimated by injuries and that had a compounding effect on Wentz’s game. To be clear, he’s far from a lock to bounce back, but in Indy, he’ll play behind a much more robust offensive line and will be reunited with Frank Reich. If Wentz is able to steer the ship and get the Colts into the playoffs, this bet will pay off handsomely.
Seahawks to reach the playoffs: Yes -130
Sure, this number is juiced to the Seahawks making the postseason, but this is about as sure of a bet as there is on the board. While they may not be a Super Bowl contender, Seattle has made the postseason in eight of the last nine years. With Russell Wilson under center in new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron’s offense, the Seahawks are a solid bet to make yet another postseason appearance in 2021.
Houston Texans to have a 0-17 record: Yes +1,500
OK, so this would be a historic outcome, as we’ve never had an 0-17 team in the history of the NFL. But if there’s a team to do it, it’s the Texans. In the span of the last two years, this team traded away their franchise wideout in DeAndre Hopkins, severed ties with face of the franchise J.J. Watt, and look likely to be parting ways with quarterback Deshaun Watson, regardless of the outcome of his legal issues. And that’s not to mention the unlikely hiring of David Culley. On paper, this is the league’s worse roster with minimal talent at wideout, a geriatric running back room and a bridge quarterback under center. And don’t get me started on the defense. This one might not be worth a whole betting unit, but it is most certainly worth some action.
Los Angeles Rams to reach Super Bowl 56: Yes +600
We only need to go back three seasons to find Sean McVay and the Rams in the Super Bowl. And sure, that squad lost to Bill Belichick’s Patriots, but McVay has shown to be one of the offensive minds in the NFL. Unfortunately, he was largely held back by Jared Goff.
Enter Matthew Stafford. With Stafford under center, McVay will be able to open up his playbook and run things that simply weren’t doable for Goff. And that’s not to mention the fact that the Rams have arguably the league’s best defense. An elite defense coupled with an explosive offense is extremely dangerous in the NFL. We need to look no further than the Bucs last season. The Rams have the firepower on both sides of the ball to make a serious run at this year’s Super Bowl. If you want to double-dip here, the Rams are also +1,200 to win the Super Bowl.
