Welcome all to the third edition of State of the Steal. In Part Two (check it out here), I dug into over 20 hitters who could set career highs for stolen bases in 2025 and potentially count among the league leaders in steals. The same may be true for some of the players in this edition, but each of them must first win a spring training position battle to gain enough playing time to make that happen. That’s why we’re calling this one State of the Steal — Spring Training Position Battles.
Not every spring camp has a battle that fits our stolen base-centric criteria. As a reminder, we’re looking only at position battles that would impact players with 10-plus SB potential should they earn a starting job or additional PA. We should also note that there’s only been about a week and a half of spring games so far, and all our available spring stats are tiny sample sizes that should be taken with a Milton Waddams-sized grain of salt. All stats cited are through March 3.
Now, let’s get on with our spring training position battles…
