(It’s fantasy baseball draft season! The FTN Fantasy team and a host of helpful guests present our Ultimate 2025 Fantasy Baseball Guide. Check it out and prepare for the 2025 MLB season.)
Fantasy baseball leagues are won by rostering players who earn positive returns on investment.
The more profitable hitters and pitchers we collect in the draft, the more momentum we gain early in the standings, and the less reliant our teams are on free-agent pickups during the 27-week grind. However, we can’t beat dialed-in competitors without the in-season statistical boosts from those free-agent pickups. This isn’t fantasy football where back in 2017, Dave from Accounting auto-drafted a league-winning office work league squad never once logging in to set his lineups.
Some fantasy baseball managers treat late draft rounds like blindfolded darts. Managers who spend considerable time on offseason research and analysis see reserve-round drafting as a competitive advantage – an opportunity to draft players the market undervalues who we may deem highly profitable.
Every December, this article dives into the pool of hitters with an average draft position of 250 and beyond who can provide our fantasy teams with a massive ROI. We will review recent seasons for 250-plus ADP hitters who returned a top-125 overall value in standard 5×5 roto leagues – Rounds 1-8 in 15-team leagues or the first 10 rounds of 12-teamers. In standard auction league formats, the full-season minimum value threshold is between $10 and $15 in the low double digits.
Profitable Hitters, 2021-2024
If you’ve been around the fantasy baseball Twitter block, you may recall Justin Mason’s strange obsession with Baltimore Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins In January of 2021, Mullins was being drafted in the 19-20th round of 15-teamers (around 300 ADP). Mullins garnered positive buzz in Spring Training, and though he was earning leadoff at-bats in exhibition games, his ADP never cracked the top 250. Mullins earned a massive profit for investors – second-round value – and was the only hitter that season with at least 30 HR and 30 SB.
