Check out our entire college basketball season preview!
The college basketball season is less than two weeks away, and here at FTN Fantasy we have you covered for what promises to be another thrilling year of upsets and incredible finishes. We will be previewing each team from all of the major conferences along with some mid-majors as well. We will recap betting trends from last season, list projected starters, preview the season and talk about any key players for that program.
The ACC is home to some of the most storied programs in the history of college basketball. Lately, the Final Four champion has come out of the Big East or the Big 12, but the ACC has a great chance to reclaim the title of the best conference in CBB. There has been an influx of talent via the transfer portal, good old fashioned recruiting and the additions of SMU, Stanford and Cal.
Let’s take a look at the Virginia Tech Hokies.
2024-25 College Basketball Season Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies
Conference: ACC
Head Coach: Mike Young (6th season)
2023-2024 Record: 19-15
ATS: 15-19
O/U: 19-14-1
Projected Starters: G Jaden Schutt, G Rodney Brown, F Ben Burnham, F Toibu Lawal, C Mylyjael Poteat
Things are going to be tough for the Hokies initially, as they lost the nucleus of their team to the portal along with Hysier Miller, their top offseason addition who was just kicked off the team for past transgressions that took place at Temple. Replacing Sean Pedulla wouldn’t be easy for anyone, but it’s even harder now that your projected top player is also gone.
Ben Burnham (11.9 PPG at Charleston), Rodney Brown (3.5 PPG at Cal), Jaden Schutt (redshirt at Duke last year) and Toibu Lawal (7.7 PPG at VCU) make up the new core, while freshmen Ryan Jones and Tyler Johnson will be secondary pieces.
Key Player: Ben Burnham
The Charleston transfer is a hard-nosed kid who is a great fit in Mike Young’s system. When the Cougars fell behind big to Alabama in the first round of the tournament last year, Burnham kept fighting and led all scorers in the second half. It’s clear that he will be the top option on the team, and we should see his averages of 11.9 PPG and 4.5 RPG soar in his final collegiate season. With Hysier Miller gone, the team could potentially look to run the offense through Burnham as a high-post option. He has proven to be a willing passer in the past, and his reputation as a capable shooter will pay dividends.
