Check out our entire college basketball season preview!
The college basketball season is less than three weeks away, and here at FTN Fantasy we have you covered for what promises to be another thrilling year of upsets and incredible finishes. I will be taking you around the country with a betting preview of the major conferences. I recap the betting trends from last season, list projected starters, preview the season, identify a key player, and reveal how I’m backing or fading each team.
Let’s start with the best conference in college basketball, the Big 12. Last season, the conference added four new teams in Houston, BYU, Cincinnati and UCF. This year, the conference expanded to 16 teams, with Arizona State, Utah, Colorado and Arizona bolstering an already-elite conference. The Big 12 says farewell to Texas and Oklahoma, who are now in the SEC.
Let’s take a look at our betting preview for the Arizona State Sun Devils.
2024-2025 College Basketball Season Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils
Conference: Pac-12
Head Coach: Bobby Hurley (10th season)
2023-2024 Record: 14-18 (9-12)
ATS: 14-18
O/U: 17-15
Projected Starters: G Alston Mason; G Adam Miller; F BJ Freeman; F Basheer Jihad; C Jayden Quantance
Bobby Hurley’s tenure with Arizona State has been marked with inconsistent play mixed with impressive upsets. The Sun Devils enjoy a strong home-court advantage, defeating Utah, Colorado, Washington State and USC last year. Arizona State struggles on the boards, which is why they put a premium on limiting turnovers last season, ranking first within the Pac-12.
The one thing Hurley does well is recruit. Arizona State nabbed the ninth-best recruiting class per 247 sports, led by five-star prospect Jayden Quaintance of North Carolina. Shooting guard Josan Sanon and small forward Amier Ali give the Sun Devils three Top 100 prospects.
Adam Miller (12 PPG) returns and will be joined in the starting lineup by Milwaukee leading scorer BJ Freeman, who posted 21.1 PPG, 6.6 RPG, and 4.5 APG last season for the Panthers. Basheer Jihad (18.6 PPG) from Ball State provides scoring and superb defense with 2.2 stocks per game.
Key Player: Jayden Quaintance
This was a huge get for Arizona State, as Quaintance has difference-making ability. This may be the most talented roster Hurley has ever assembled, with unique size. Quaintance decommitted from Kentucky after John Calipari left and gave Arizona State its highest-ranked recruit since Josh Christoper in 2020. He just turned 17 years old but is 6-foot-9, 230-pounds and has impressive ball-handling skills and athleticism. He is a future lottery pick, but can he make a big enough impact in his freshman year to push the Sun Devils into the upper echelon of the Big 12?
