2024-2025 College Basketball Preview: Baylor Bears

Share

Check out our entire college basketball season preview!

The college basketball season is less than three weeks away, and here at FTN Fantasy we have you covered for what promises to be another thrilling year of upsets and incredible finishes. I will be taking you around the country with a betting preview of the major conferences. I recap the betting trends from last season, list projected starters, preview the season, identify a key player, and reveal how I’m backing or fading each team.

Let’s start with the best conference in college basketball, the Big 12. Last season, the conference added four new teams in Houston, BYU, Cincinnati and UCF. This year, the conference expanded to 16 teams, with Arizona State, Utah, Colorado and Arizona bolstering an already-elite conference. The Big 12 says farewell to Texas and Oklahoma, who are now in the SEC.

Let’s take a look at our betting preview for the Baylor Bears.

2024-2025 College Basketball Season Preview: Baylor Bears

Conference: Big 12
Head Coach: Scott Drew (22nd season)
2022-2023 Record: 24-11(11-7)
ATS: 20-12-2
O/U: 18-16
Projected Starters: GJeremy Roach; G Jayden Nunn; F VJ Edgecombe; F Jalen Celestine; C Norchad Omier

The Bears haven’t advanced past the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the three years since winning the national title. Scott Drew scored in the transfer portal with Duke guard Jeremy Roach and Miami center Norchad Omier. He also welcomed freshman VJ Edgecombe, the fifth-ranked prospect in the 2024 class.

Baylor fizzled out toward the end of the year after winning five of six games in mid-February. They were eliminated by eventual Big 12 tournament champion Iowa State in the conference tournament and Elite Eight finalist Clemson in the NCAA Tournament. Baylor has maintained a high offensive floor with solid rebounding and elite 3P shooting. The Bears ranked fourth in the nation at 39.5% from 3P and second in the conference in Big 12 field goal percentage (48.3%).

Key Player: VJ Edgecombe

Baylor has mirrored Kansas’ inside-outside duo of Harris-Dickinson with Jeremy Roach and Norchard Omier. I don’t see California transfer Jalen Celestine as more than a role player, and Nunn only hit double-digits 10 times starting with conference play. Edgecombe played well on the Bahamas men’s national team, and has the chance to have an immediate impact on the Bears’ offense. Edgecombe’s upside is directly tied to Baylor’s Final Four chances.
