New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos (ankle) fouled a ball off his right ankle in the top of the fourth inning in Sunday's series finale in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels, which is why he did not play on Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Manager Carlos Mendoza said Vientos was scheduled to go through his regular pregame routine in St. Louis but that he was being held out of the starting lineup. "Kind of [swelled] up after the game, but he's better today," Mendoza said. "He's a player for us, but I just wanted to give him a day." The Mets basically just wanted to give the 24-year-old a day off on Monday, so there's a good chance he'll be back in action on Tuesday versus the Colorado Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field.
New York Mets infielder Mark Vientos and outfielder Jesse Winker are not in the team's lineup on Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Vientos will take a seat for Monday's makeup game after starting 12 straight games at third base. The 24-year-old has produced consistent numbers at the plate over the past few weeks, hitting .269 with six home runs, eight doubles, and 17 RBI in his last 28 games. That makes him a potential add in most 12-plus team leagues moving forward. Vientos should be back in the lineup on Tuesday when the Mets travel to Colorado to take on the Rockies. Jose Iglesias will start at third base in Monday's game.
New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos will take a seat on Monday against the hosting Miami Marlins. Vientos will receive the day off after starting in each of the team's last 12 games. With Vientos starting on the bench, veteran Jose Iglesias will move to third base and bat seventh, while Jeff McNeil starts at the keystone and hits eighth against Marlins right-hander Yonny Chirinos. Vientos has earned the starting third base job in 2024 by hitting .292 in 211 plate appearances while also clubbing 12 homers. He's been even better in July, going 18-for-60 (.300) with two homers, four doubles and eight RBI in 16 starts. Iglesias, 34, has come out of nowhere to hit .389/.427/.578 with a 1.005 OPS for the Mets in 90 at-bats, albeit with just three homers and 16 RBI. He has never faced Chirinos in his career.
New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run in Friday's 7-6 win over the Rockies. The 24-year-old also collected two RBI, scored once, and drew a walk in the contest. The home run was his 12th of the year and it was his fifth multi-hit game of July, going 14-for-42 (.333) through 11 games this month. The former second-round draft pick has been productive during his time in the majors this season, slashing .299/.353/.569 with a .393 wOBA and 161 wRC+ in 49 games (190 PA). He's surprisingly still only rostered in 62% of Yahoo leagues and, for interested managers, he brings both 1B and 3B eligibility, offering some flexibility in how he is deployed.
New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos is out of the team's starting lineup on Friday against the hosting Pittsburgh Pirates for the start of a weekend series. Veteran Jose Iglesias will man the hot corner and will hit seventh for the Mets versus rookie right-handed flamethrower Paul Skenes. Vientos will get a break after starting in each of the team's last 10 ballgames. The 24-year-old has settled into a regular role at third for the Mets while hitting an impressive .291/.346/.568 with a .913 OPS, 11 home runs, 29 RBI and 26 runs scored in 148 at-bats in 2024. He's off to a good start in July, too, going 5-for-16 (.313) with a homer, double and four RBI in four games. Iglesias has swung a hot bat since joining the Mets as a utility man but has little upside in Friday's matchup against Skenes while hitting near the bottom of the lineup.
