New York Mets shortstop prospect Luisangel Acuna hit his second home run of the season on Sunday for Triple-A Syracuse. The 22-year-old went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in Game 2 of a doubleheader, while the home run was his first since the first game of the season. Not known as much for his power as his older brother, he does still have some wheels, swiping 57 bags last season, and is up to eight so far in 2024. MLB's 59th-ranked prospect overall is inching closer to the bigs, but with Francisco Lindor blocking him at short it's uncertain where he would fit in. Managers in need of steals will need to be ready once he earns the promotion.
New York Mets shortstop prospect Luisangel Acuna is showing off the speed at Triple-A, but not much power yet. The 22-year-old hit a home run in his first game of the season, however, has not hit one since. Ronald's brother went 2-for-5 with a single, a triple, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored for Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, bringing his season slashline to a pedestrian .211/.253/.310. Acuna has stolen seven bases so far this year and 40 or more each of the past three seasons. Francisco Lindor is blocking his way to the majors at shortstop though, but he could make it to Queens as a second baseman or outfielder. He's not forcing the issue with his performance at the plate, however.
The New York Mets optioned infield prospect Luisangel Acuna and left-hander Kolton Ingram to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday and reassigned outfielder Drew Gilbert, right-handers Eric Orze, Cam Robinson, Christian Scott and Mike Vasil, catcher Kevin Parada, infielder Jett Williams and left-hander Danny Young to minor-league camp. Acuna, 21, is one of the Mets' top prospects, but he will begin the 2024 season in the minors, as expected. He was the headliner in the deal with the Rangers last year that sent Max Scherzer to Texas. The Venezuelan infielder hit a combined .294/.359/.410 with nine home runs, 63 RBI, 57 stolen bases and 93 runs in 121 games with Double-A Binghamton and Double-A Frisco. If Acuna, one of the younger brothers of Ronald Acuna Jr., tears it up at Syracuse this year, he could make his MLB debut later this year.
New York Mets infielders Jett Williams and Luisangel Acuna are drawing a lot of interest as Mets camp gets underway in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. Williams is the Mets' highest-rated prospect (No.45 in the Top 100) but Acuna is also considered a high-end prospect. Williams was a first-round pick back in 2022 and slashed .263/.425/.451 with 13 home runs, 55 RBI, and 45 steals in 121 minor-league games across three levels. Williams will see time at center field and shortstop while Acuna will get reps at second and shortstop as well. Williams' speed could play well in center field. According to beat writer Anthony DiComo both Acuna and Williams have an outside chance to appear in the majors at some point late in the season. They are must-draft players in dynasty formats but there's no need to rush and draft them in redraft leagues. Both are names to keep an eye on, however, if they do indeed get called up later in the year.
