Most fantasy baseball managers who have tried auctions love the format. In my opinion, it is by far the most fun – and equitable – format available for rostering players. Although I had been managing baseball teams for years before attempting my first auction, as soon as I tried the format I was hooked. My hope is that auctions continue to grow in popularity, especially the live NFBC auctions in which I participate every March.
This is my third recent article focused on auctions. I recently wrote about common auction mistakes that managers make. As part of FTN’s 2025 Fantasy Baseball Guide, I started this two-part primer – intended to help auction novices, and hopefully more experienced managers – mastering some of the strategies and nuances of the format. Part 1 focused on pre-auction preparations and strategies and addressed the following topics: (1) the basic rules; (2) player evaluation; (3) average auction value (“AAV”) data; (4) projections and valuations; (5) winnowing the player pool; and (6) the development of an auction strategy. Readers are encouraged to review Part 1 before diving into this one, which focuses on in-draft strategies.
