Even though Bill Belichick is gone, New England Patriots former first-round quarterback Mac Jones, who lost the starting role and ended up the third-stringer by the end of 2023, is a trade candidate in the coming weeks and will most likely end up somewhere else in 2024. The Patriots own the No. 3 overall pick in this year's NFL draft, and all indications are that they will seriously explore taking of the draft's top QBs as they move into the Jerod Mayo era in New England. If USC's Caleb Williams and North Carolina's Drake Maye go first and second in the draft, the Patriots could take a third QB or trade back with another team if they don't like who slides to them. Jones threw for 22 touchdowns as a rookie in 2021 but has regressed tremendously the last two years, which was one of the big reasons the team moved on from Belichick after 24 years and six Super Bowl rings.
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is eligible for a contract extension this offseason after playing out the first three years of his deal, and general manager Trent Baalke said there's "no doubt" about the former first overall pick's long-term relationship with the organization. Lawrence is coming off an up-and-down season in 2023 that was marred by several injuries. He's eligible to have his fifth-year option picked up, which would be worth a projected $21.978 million. The Jaguars may not necessarily give Lawrence a long-term contract extension this offseason, but it's likely coming and will almost certainly be record-breaking. In 2023, Lawrence completed 65.6% of his passes for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while losing seven fumbles. He was also sacked 35 times, 12th-most in the league. With better health in 2024, Lawrence could be primed for a bounce-back campaign.
Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said the team will have a "heart to heart" discussion with quarterback Trevor Lawrence this offseason about whether a long-term contract extension happens now or in 2025. The Jaguars will almost certainly pick up Lawrence's fifth-year option at some point this offseason. The former first overall pick out of Clemson led the Jags to a playoff appearance in just his second season and the team was off to a fast start in 2023 before crumbling down the stretch. The 24-year-old dealt with several injuries that most likely hurt his production, but he's now thrown for 11,770 yards, 58 touchdowns and 39 interceptions in his first three seasons. Lawrence will be a midrange QB1 for fantasy managers heading into the 2024 season, and an extension is likely a matter of when, not if, for Lawrence and the Jaguars.
Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis said he expects to reach free agency in March. He also said he'd be open to re-signing with the Bills, but also noted how the whole 2023 season went "and there was nothing" in terms of extension talks. Davis missed both of the team's playoff games due to a sprained PCL he suffered in the Week 18 win over the Miami Dolphins and disappeared far too frequently during the regular season for the Bills to be thrilled to offer him a new contract for 2024 and beyond. The 24-year-old has proven to be an unpredictable boom/bust fantasy wideout, finishing this past season with 45 catches for 746 yards and a career-high-tying seven touchdowns in 17 games. Davis has scored at least six touchdowns in all four of his NFL seasons, but leaving Buffalo would be bad news for his already shaky touchdown-dependent fantasy value.
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Devin Duvernay (back) is officially active for Saturday's game against the Houston Texans. He had been listed as questionable but was trending in the right direction after the Ravens activated him from injured reserve. Over 13 games during the regular season, Duvernay amassed just four receptions for 18 total yards. He primarily contributed on special teams, returning 23 punts and nine kickoffs. He should continue to be avoided by fantasy managers and bettors ahead of the Divisional Round.
