The Boston Red Sox are among the teams interested in adding free-agent infielder Gio Urshela, according to a source. In addition to Boston, the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, and Miami Marlins have been looking at Urshela. His market has been slow to develop this offseason. The 32-year-old veteran is best known for three strong years with the Yankees from 2019-21. He's seen most of his appearances (585 of 643) at third base, where the Red Sox already have Rafael Devers. If signed, the Red Sox likely would view Urshela as a right-handed option at first base as an upgrade over Bobby Dalbec while providing insurance for Devers at the hot corner. Urshela fractured his pelvis in June and played only 62 games for the Angels in 2023.
Free-agent third baseman Gio Urshela has received contract offers from both the Los Angeles Angels and Miami Marlins. It was reported on Tuesday that Urshela was receiving interest from the Yankees, Mets, and Marlins but the Angels, Urshela's 2023 team, seemingly has significant interest in retaining him. The 32-year-old suffered a fractured pelvis last season and was limited to just 62 games. He hit a healthy .299 in that time but his power cratered as he slugged just two homers alongside a .288 xwOBA across 228 trips to the plate. However, Sanchez hit .285 with 13 home runs and 27 doubles with the 2022 Twins, production that led to a 119 wRC+ that grades out 19% superior to the league average. He is being viewed a significant bounce-back option for several clubs. He doesn't generate the type of power fantasy owners should be seeking at third base.
Free-agent infielder Gio Urshela has drawn interest from the New York Mets, Miami Marlins and New York Yankees, according to a source. The 32-year-old veteran had a .703 OPS in 62 games with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023 before seeing his season come to an end in the middle of June due to a fractured left pelvis. Urshela didn't need surgery, though, and should be fine for the start of the 2024 regular season, barring any type of setback in spring training. He's probably going to have to settle for a one-year deal wherever he lands. In addition to his .703 OPS with the Angels, Urshela hit .299/.329/.374 with two home runs, 24 RBI, three steals and 22 runs scored last year before his season-ending injury. He possesses good bat-to-ball skills but little power for fantasy managers at the hot corner.
