Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black expects right-hander German Marquez (elbow) to make two more minor-league rehab starts with Double-A Hartford as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Marquez gave up four earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning while throwing 33 pitches in his last rehab start on Friday for Triple-A Albuquerque. After that outing, the 29-year-old will now need two more starts in the minors to build his pitch count up before the Rockies are comfortable adding him to their starting rotation for the second half of the season. Marquez started his rehab assignment on June 12 and has allowed a total of eight earned runs while striking out 13 and walking three in 8 2/3 innings. Fantasy managers will want to temper expectations when he returns to the majors, but Marquez could have some deep-league streaming appeal.
Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow) will make another minor-league rehab start with Double-A Hartford this week following his outing on Saturday with Triple-A Albuquerque, where he lasted just two-thirds of an inning. Marquez will then return to Colorado's starting rotation next week on the road against the Cincinnati Reds if all goes well with his final rehab start. The 29-year-old so far has an ugly 9.58 ERA with 14 strikeouts and four walks in 10 1/3 innings on his rehab assignment. Marquez has gotten up to 52 total pitches in an outing as he finalizes his rehab after having Tommy John surgery. He will be rejoining the Rockies' rotation before the All-Star break, but fantasy managers in mixed leagues should be extremely hesitant to use him as a streamer for at least a while as he regains his footing in the big leagues.
Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow) will throw again in a minor-league rehab appearance with Triple-A Albuquerque. Marquez cruised through his third rehab start for High-A Spokane last Saturday, tossing four scoreless innings with three strikeouts and two walks while throwing strikes on 28 of his 50 pitches. "The velocity was good," Marquez said. "My fastball had some life, and my breaking ball was nice." The 29-year-old continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery and could return to Colorado's starting rotation before the All-Star break in mid-July as long as he doesn't encounter any setbacks. The Venezuelan hurler was an All-Star as recently as 2021 and could become a matchup-based streamer in deep-mixed fantasy leagues when he's back, although we'd probably temper expectations after his long layoff.
Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow), who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, threw what manager Bud Black called "a really solid bullpen" of 30 to 35 pitches in Los Angeles on Saturday while mixing in some breaking balls with a majority of fastballs. "He's progressing and will go back to Arizona to get on plan and get back in ballgames. He's doing great," said Black, who gave a return estimate of early July. Marquez took a step back after feeling discomfort in the back of his right elbow after recently throwing in an Arizona Complex League game, but he remains on track to return in 2024 despite the minor setback. He's currently going through a spring training-type progression and could return just before the All-Star break. When healthy, Marquez will be a rotation option for Colorado, but fantasy managers may want to temper expectations for a pitcher with a 4.41 career ERA.
Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black is encouraged by the progress of right-hander German Marquez (elbow), who pitched 1 2/3 innings on May 10 in an Arizona Complex League game, which was his first game action since suffering a right-elbow injury on April 26 of 2023. Marquez is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will have a full spring training-type regimen, which will include a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment. The Rockies are spacing his ACL appearances out far enough that he'll be able to restart his rehab clock. Between ACL appearances, Marquez is throwing in extended spring camp as he builds his right arm back up. Barring a setback in his recovery, the 29-year-old could rejoin Colorado's starting rotation around the middle of the 2024 season.
