Colorado Rockies right-hander Cal Quantrill (forearm) is listed as the team's probable starting pitcher for Friday's contest against the visiting division-rival San Diego Padres. Quantrill was scratched from his previous scheduled start on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks after he felt some right-forearm soreness after his previous start on Aug. 4 against the Padres. The 29-year-old would have already been a shaky fantasy option at hitter-friendly Coors Field against one of the hottest teams in the second half this weekend, and he's even more avoidable now coming off his forearm injury. Quantrill has a weak 17.4% strikeout rate in his 23 starts (122 1/3 innings) in 2024. On Aug. 4 against SD, he gave up three earned runs on five hits (two homers) while walking three and striking out two in 4 1/3 innings on the road.
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Cal Quantrill (forearm) is dealing with general forearm soreness and will have his next start pushed back, according to Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com. The 29-year-old has been feeling some soreness from his previous outing on August 4 and will take at least one turn in the rotation off to rest. The 29-year-old has struggled this season, posting a 4.56 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and a 48:92 BB:K ratio. Across his previous three outings, he has served up 12 earned runs with a 7.71 ERA and a 1.93 WHIP. Quantrill should remain on all waiver wires for the time being and should only be deployed in deeper NL-only formats in favorable matchups.
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Cal Quantrill put together a fairly strong outing during Thursday's game against the San Francisco Giants. The right-hander allowed only one run over six innings of work during Thursday's victory. Quantrill also gave up five hits and walked three batters, but he was able to work around the traffic. This is now back-to-back quality outings for Quantrill as he lowers his ERA to 3.94 on the year. We'll see if he can keep the good times rolling against the San Diego Padres during his next start.
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Cal Quantrill silenced the Pittsburgh Pirates in Friday's 3-1 victory, tossing 7 2/3 scoreless innings of three-hit ball with no walks on a season-high nine strikeouts en route to his first win of the year. Although he's not known for his bat-missing stuff, Quantrill dominated Pittsburgh for his longest start of the 2024 regular season on Friday and a big bounce-back effort after surrendering six runs in his last appearance at home versus the Houston Astros. The soft-throwing 29-year-old right-hander improved his ERA to 4.31 with a 1.29 WHIP and 26:14 K:BB over 39 2/3 frames (seven starts) this season from Colorado's rotation. Despite the strong showing, Quantrill still won't be the most exciting streaming option for fantasy purposes in his next projected start on Thursday at Coors Field against the division-rival San Francisco Giants.
The Colorado Rockies and right-hander Cal Quantrill have avoided arbitration with a one-year, $6.55 million contract. The Rockies acquired the 28-year-old from the Guardians in November after he was designated for assignment by Cleveland. It was a tough 2023 season for Quantrill as he posted a 5.24 ERA across 19 starts but he also posted a 2.89 ERA in 40 outings (22 starts) in the 2021 season and followed that up with a 3.38 ERA across a career-high 32 starts in the 2022 campaign. Certainly, the pitching-needy Rockies saw an opportunity to buy low on a player with a rock-solid 3.83 ERA across 570 2/3 innings at the big-league level.
