2024 College Basketball Power Rankings

College basketball season is back, which means it’s time to search for betting edges on the hardwood.

Below, you’ll find FTN’s college basketball power rankings for the 2024 season. These will be updated every week after games, adjusting for results, news and injuries. We can use these ratings to create a point spread between any two teams in the country on a neutral court. Just subtract the lower team’s rating from the higher-ranked team’s rating. If you compare that number to the spread of a particular game, you can find situations where FTN identifies a betting edge. We will also keep track of teams that are trending up or down, helping to further identify value compared to the public’s perception on media polls.

Here is the first iteration of the FTN College Basketball Power Rankings for the 2024-2025 season!

Key Takeaways

  • We love Iowa State and head coach T.J. Otzelberger. The Cyclones play with pace and discipline on offense, while relying on one of the most tenacious defenses in college basketball. The Cyclones have ranked second-best in the nation in defensive turnovers percentage each of the past two seasons. Iowa State resides in the top spot of our FTN Power Rankings.
  • Kansas falls seven spots to its current No. 10 overall ranking. The Jayhawks jumped out to a 51-31 lead against North Carolina on Saturday, only to trail 80-79 with seven minutes remaining. Kansas held on for the win, but questions remain about its defense and rebounding.
  • I’m starting to believe in Kevin Willard and Maryland. The Terrapins took care of business with two 20-plus point blowouts of Manhattan and Mount St. Mary’s. Freshman Derik Queen is a lottery pick, with Ja’Kobi Gillespie, Selton Miguel and Rodney Rice attacking teams from the perimeter.
  • Will the real Baylor Bears please stand up? Baylor was torched by Gonzaga, 101-63, on opening night. The Bulldogs shot 13-of-31 (42%) from deep but struggled to beat Arizona State last night. Baylor looked much better in a 72-67 home win over Arkansas and needs to establish consistency in its next two home games against Sam Houston State and Tarleton State.
  • UCLA looked extremely vulnerable in its 72-64 loss to New Mexico. Once Kobe Johnson left the game with foul trouble, the Bruins had no consistency on either end of the floor. The Bruins lack offensive playmakers and fall three spots to No. 20 overall in our power rankings.
