Texans Place Brevin Jordan On Injured Reserve

The Houston Texans placed tight end Brevin Jordan (undisclosed) on Injured Reserve on Wednesday, meaning Jordan will now have to miss at least the team's next four games. Jordan will be eligible to return to play in Week 7 on the road at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers. It helps explain why the Texans signed former Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith to their practice squad on Tuesday. In the first two games of the season, Jordan caught only two passes on three targets for seven yards while working behind starter Dalton Schultz. With Jordan now out for the foreseeable future, the Texans will roll with rookie Cade Stover, Chris Myarick and Smith as depth behind Schultz at the position. Schultz has also been a disappointment for fantasy managers as a TE1 option through the first two weeks in 2024, catching five of six targets for only 37 yards.

Texans Sign Irv Smith To Practice Squad

The Houston Texans signed free-agent tight end Irv Smith and former starting center Scott Quessenberry to their practice squad on Tuesday following successful tryouts, according to league sources. Smith, a former second-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings out of Alabama, will give Houston more depth at the TE position behind Dalton Schultz, Brevin Jordan and rookie Cade Stover. He has 109 career receptions for 973 yards and 10 touchdowns in his career with the Vikings, Bengals and Chiefs, but injuries have really held him back from reaching his true ceiling. Texans center Juice Scruggs (groin), who missed the Week 2 win over the Bears on Sunday night, is on track to return this week against the Vikings, but Quessenberry will give the team more depth at the position. Quessenberry started for Houston two seasons ago when Justin Britt stepped away for personal reasons.

Texans Work Out Irv Smith

The Houston Texans hosted free-agent tight end Irv Smith for a workout on Tuesday. Smith spent the offseason with the Kansas City Chiefs but was released after final roster cuts. Smith is a hyper-athletic tight end but has never put it all together in his career to enjoy sustained success. Should the Texans sign Smith, it would likely be to add depth to a tight end room that already includes Dalton Schultz and Brevin Jordan.

Joe Mixon's Injury Not Considered Long-Term

Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon (ankle) injured his ankle in the Sunday night win over the Chicago Bears, but his injury isn't considered a long-term one after he underwent an MRI exam on Monday, according to league sources. Mixon left the game under his own power before limping into the medical tent, and he eventually returned to the game. The 28-year-old only played seven offensive snaps after returning to the contest and finished with just nine carries for 25 yards while catching three of five targets for 25 yards through the air. Mixon's status for the Week 3 contest against the Minnesota Vikings is unknown at this time, but we should have a better idea of his availability once the team resumes practicing on Wednesday. If Mixon is limited at all or out this weekend, Cam Akers and Dameon Pierce (hamstring) would be in line for bigger roles.

Joe Mixon Getting An MRI On His Ankle

Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon (ankle) will undergo an MRI on Monday after getting hip drop tackled in Sunday night's 19-13 win over the Chicago Bears. Mixon left the game but returned to the contest after the injury. While he managed to return, Cam Akers saw more workload after Mixon suffered the injury, including a handful of rushing attempts near the goal line. Hopefully, the veteran running back won't miss significant time with the injury, especially after Dameon Pierce (hamstring) missed Sunday's matchup against the Bears, leaving Akers as the No. 2 running back. If Mixon and Pierce can't play in Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings, Akers is a borderline must-add off the waiver wire.
