San Antonio Spurs guard/forward Devin Vassell (foot) is not expected to join the team for Wednesday's visit to Houston. Interim head coach Mitch Johnson has said he doesn't believe Vassell will be ready for Wednesday's game. However, according to Johnson, Vassell is "ramping up" and could be back "soon." Vassell is recovering from foot surgery and hasn't yet featured for the Spurs this season. Julian Champagnie is filling in for him in the starting lineup. He will lose a big chunk of fantasy value when Vassell returns.
San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan exited Monday's contest against the Clippers with a thumb injury. He was limited to four points and three rebounds in 12 minutes. Stephon Castle replaced Sochan in the starting unit for the second half. The rookie guard recorded 11 points and four rebounds in 20 minutes of action. His fantasy value could get a boost if Sochan is out for Wednesday's meeting with Houston. Keldon Johnson could be another guy to benefit, although he has already seen a good amount of action off the bench.
San Antonio Spurs guard Tre Jones (ankle) suffered a right ankle sprain during the team's season opener and has been ruled out for both games against the Houston Rockets. Over the weekend, head coach Gregg Popovich said that Jones could be out for as long as two weeks. Stephon Castle will likely see some added minutes while Chris Paul should be in the game more often too. With Devin Vassell (foot) still out, Malakhi Branham could see some opportunities as well.
Per Michael C. Wright of ESPN, San Antonio Spurs point guard Chris Paul will make his preseason debut on Wednesday after signing a one-year, $11 million contract with the team in the offseason. Paul's production has dipped significantly after being in the league for almost 20 years. He played in 58 games for Golden State in last year's campaign, averaging 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, and 1.2 steals. The 39-year-old's presence will be essential for the development of center Victor Wembanyama and the other young players on the team.
According to ESPN's Michael C. Wright, San Antonio Spurs center Zach Collins (shoulder) will not play in the team's preseason game against the Magic on Wednesday. Despite not suiting up in the preseason, the 26-year-old has been participating in 5-on-5 drills during training camp after having shoulder surgery in April. Last season, Collins averaged 11.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 0.8 blocks in 69 regular season contests. Saturday, he has another chance to make his preseason debut against Utah.
