Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (elbow) logged another bullpen session on Saturday and is now set to face live hitters. The 36-year-old has been sidelined all season after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery last June. However, he has been throwing successful bullpen sessions through most of July and is now ready to face live hitters for the first time. The two-time Cy Young winner expressed, "Where I was at, throwing these three-ups, I was seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Now you're going to have somebody step in, and that's when it's starting to get close. I'm definitely looking forward to it." This is a great sign as the hard-throwing right-hander is approaching his rehab assignment. Prior to injury last summer, deGrom was on track to have another successful season, holding a 2.67 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and a 4:45 BB:K ratio across 30 innings of work. deGrom is worth stashing in all standard leagues going forward, as he could be a league winner later this summer due to his potential to produce elite strikeout numbers.
Texas Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom (elbow) was scheduled to throw a 45-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday before the game against the hosting St. Louis Cardinals. deGrom is expected to throw another bullpen during the team's current road trip before he gets the green light to begin facing live hitters in batting practice sessions. After that, the 36-year-old veteran will need a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment before he's reinstated from the injured list. deGrom is making progress and building up his arm as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, but the two-time Cy Young winner and former Rookie of the Year is still a ways away from his 2024 debut, which may not happen until late August. When he does make his return to Texas' starting rotation, fantasy managers shouldn't immediately expect a return to his pre-injury form. Look no further than Walker Buehler's struggles in his return from TJ as a prime example.
Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy says that starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (elbow) is "getting close" to facing hitters. deGrom threw another bullpen session of around 40 pitches prior to Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox, and he will throw another on Friday while the team is on the road in Toronto for a series with the Blue Jays. He'll have about three more live batting practice sessions to follow before going out on a minor-league rehab assignment shortly after Tuesday's trade deadline. Entering the final stages of his recovery from last summer's Tommy John surgery, deGrom has an eye on returning sometime in August. It remains to be seen how the 36-year-old former National League Cy Young Award winner's velocity will look in the aftermath of his second UCL procedure, but he submitted a 2.67 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and 45:4 K:BB across 30 1/3 innings last season, and it's certainly time to make sure he isn't lingering on any fantasy waiver wires.
Texas Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom (elbow) is "getting close" to facing hitters, according to manager Bruce Bochy. deGrom will throw around 40 pitches in a regular bullpen session on Tuesday and again on Friday. Bochy estimated deGrom will throw three live batting practice sessions before starting a minor-league rehab assignment. The 36-year-old two-time National League Cy Young winner is recovering from Tommy John surgery and probably isn't going to be ready to rejoin Texas' starting rotation until late August in a best-case scenario. The Rangers aren't going to rush the four-time All-Star along, either, especially since there's a good chance they won't even have a chance to defend their World Series title in the postseason. deGrom isn't going to have much time to contribute when he does return, and fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to immediately return to his pre-injury form.
Texas Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom (elbow) threw a bullpen session on Friday and mixed in some sliders along with his fastballs. "All went well, he felt great," manager Bruce Bochy said. deGrom continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery that has kept him out all season long. This was the 36-year-old veteran's third bullpen session and the first time that he threw anything other than fastballs or changeups. Barring a setback, deGrom is expected to be an option for the Rangers' starting rotation in the second half, but there's no timetable for his return, and he'll need a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment first. By the time deGrom makes his 2024 debut, he won't have many starts in order to make an impact for fantasy managers to close out the year. The two-time Cy Young winner and four-time All-Star still has the ability to be a dominant pitcher when healthy, but he hasn't made over 15 starts in a single season since 2019.
