San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason will take on the New England Patriots in a home interconference matchup on Sunday. Last week, Mason was disappointing for fantasy managers, coming into the game against the Rams in Los Angeles as a Top-5 consensus RB but finishing as the RB25 with 9.8 half-PPR points. It was the first time in the young season that Mason failed to reach the end zone. New England's run defense has been decent, ranking as the 13th-toughest matchup for opposing running backs in half-PPR. In LA last week the 49ers also worked rookie Isaac Guerendo into the mix, handing him five carries for 19 yards after only getting one total carry in San Francisco's first two games. It seems unlikely that number would grow much this week given how head coach Kyle Shanahan tends to ride his lead back, but the development is worth noting. Deebo Samuel (calf), also has a chance of returning and peeling off a handful of carries as well. Nevertheless, Mason has done an excellent job filling in for Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) so far in this run-centric, potent offense, which puts him right in the thick of the RB1 ranks again in Week 4.

He took 19 carries for 77 yards and caught both of his two targets for 11 yards receiving. As the stat line suggests, Mason wasn't bad in this one but failed to find the end zone for the first time this year, limiting his fantasy day. In the first two games of 2024, Mason completely dominated the running back touches but rookie Isaac Guerendo cut into his workload with five carries of his own for 19 yards against LA. It wasn't the RB1 performance that fantasy managers were looking for in Week 3 but Mason didn't look bad. There could come a time while Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) is out that Guerendo becomes even more involved, but it doesn't appear to be a worry just yet. Mason will resume his bell-cow role when the 49ers host the New England Patriots next Sunday.

San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason has momentum coming into a Week 3 matchup versus the Rams in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. The 49ers appear to have developed a gem in the undrafted 25-year-old who spent his last two years at Georgia Tech overshadowed by Jamyr Gibbs. Through two games Mason -- who goes by J.P. around the 49ers facility -- is the overall RB7 in half-PPR scoring. The Rams have struggled to stop the run in the young season, allowing the third-most half-PPR points to running backs. Last week, they let Arizona's James Connor go for 122 yards and a touchdown. Before that, in Detroit, David Montgomery and Gibbs combined for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Mason began the season in relative obscurity as Christian McCaffrey's backup but in the absence of CMC (Achilles), he has skyrocketed to high-end RB1 and must-start status in Week 3.

The second-year undrafted pro from Georgia Tech racked up exactly 100 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries and caught his only target for four yards receiving. He fumbled once, in the second quarter, but quickly recovered it. Mason once again looked the part of a Shanahan zone running back, showing vision and burst with a one-cut downhill style throughout the game. With Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) out for the season and All-Pro starter Christian McCaffrey out until at least Week 6 and possibly even longer, those who have rostered Mason have to be excited about what he's doing with the keys to the backfield. Mason will run up against the Rams in Los Angeles in Week 3 next Sunday.

Mason catapulted himself into the forefront of fantasy football conversations by shredding the New York Jets' run defense last week as the replacement for All-Pro starter Christian McCaffrey (Achilles). Mason finished that game with 147 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown while chipping in one reception for five yards. Those looking for an encore to Mason's career day are faced with a Minnesota defense that held New York Giants running backs to 42 yards rushing, 29 yards receiving, and no touchdowns in Week 1. The Vikings were also quite good against the run in 2023 as well, allowing the eighth-fewest points to running backs in half-PPR. Mason is not CMC, but a Top-10 finish is in play this week even against a quality defense, given the 49ers' perennial commitment to the run game and how sharp it looked last week. Treat Mason as a back-end RB1 in Week 2.
