Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said to expect rookie first-round quarterback Jayden Daniels to play one to two offensive series in Saturday's preseason contest versus the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium. NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe came away very impressed with Daniels after watching him in a joint practice with the Dolphins on Thursday. The 23-year-old second overall pick out of LSU led the offense to five straight touchdowns during a red-zone drill on Thursday against Miami and looks comfortable and confident with the Commanders' scheme heading into his first NFL campaign. In his NFL debut last week against the New York Jets, Daniels went 2-for-3 for 45 yards and ran for a three-yard TD while playing only one series. So far, Daniels looks like the real deal and should even have QB1 upside in favorable matchups in fantasy in 2024.
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels looked sharp in his lone possession in his first professional game on Saturday afternoon. The number-two overall pick in this year's draft got things started with a 42-yard pass to wide receiver Dyami Brown on their first third down to move the Commanders into opposing territory. He then completed a short pass to Terry McLaurin for three yards before letting his two running backs, Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler, bring the Commanders into the red zone. The former LSU Tiger then capped the drive off by taking the ball into the end zone himself on a three-yard rush. This was a great debut for the reigning Heisman winner, as he was able to show off both his legs and his arm as well. Last season at LSU, the 23-year-old threw for 3,812 yards while tallying 1,134 on the ground. Daniels is a great upside pick with a current Yahoo ADP of 109.8, given his elite rushing ability.
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is already showcasing his comfort in the new offense by calling deep-play audibles. Running back Austin Ekeler revealed that Daniels changed the play from a planned screen pass to an all-go route, leading to a deep completion to Dyami Brown. OL Sam Cosmi also praised Daniels for his decision-making, noting the 42-yard strike and saying, "I think we've got a guy back there." Daniels, who has drawn significant interest from fantasy experts and fans, had an impressive debut in his first preseason game. Known for being the only FBS player with over 12,000 passing yards and more than 3,000 rushing yards, Daniels presents intriguing value as a late-round fantasy quarterback pick. With a strong supporting cast and his dual-threat capabilities, he stands out as a potential QB1 option for those looking to prioritize other positions early in their drafts.
The Washington Commanders have named rookie Jayden Daniels their starting quarterback on the season's initial depth chart, a decision many had widely anticipated. Initially, Daniels and Marcus Mariota split first-team reps, with Mariota often getting the first look. Still, as training camp progressed from July to August, Daniels took the majority of reps. Jeff Driskel is listed third on the depth chart, with undrafted rookie Sam Hartman fourth. On Saturday, Daniels will start the preseason opener against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. He's an intriguing late-round fantasy quarterback pick due to his solid supporting cast and rushing ability, and he stands out as the only FBS player in college football history with over 12,000 passing yards and more than 3,000 rushing yards. The main concern is the uncertainty of his offensive line, particularly at left tackle, where 33-year-old Cornelius Lucas or rookie Brandon Coleman will start. Nonetheless, Daniels offers significant upside as a QB1 option in later drafts, allowing you to prioritize other positions early on.
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is set to play in the team's first preseason game against the New York Jets. This isn't shocking news after Daniels was taken as the No. 2 overall selection in this year's draft. He will get his first taste of NFL action next weekend as the organization is hopeful Daniels is their quarterback of the future. It's worth noting that the Commanders haven't revealed their starter for Week 1. Both Marcus Mariota and Daniels have been given first-team reps in camp. The assumption is Daniels will start the season opener, but we'll wait and see how Daniels looks in the preseason opener.
