Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry said on Tuesday that the team might slow play things with quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson (hip) as the offseason program opens on April 15. However, Berry said the signing of former Baltimore Ravens backup Tyler Huntley on March 17 was independent of Thompson-Robinson's injury. Before his season-ending injury in 2023, Thompson-Robinson, a fifth-round pick out of UCLA, went 1-2 in his first three NFL starts, throwing for 440 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. The Browns were happy with DTR's contributions as he was forced to step into a starting role in his rookie season. However, with Jameis Winston also in town, he's likely to begin training camp as the team's No. 4 QB.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson (shoulder) said on his QB Unplugged podcast that he's making good progress this offseason after suffering a fracture in his right shoulder last year that cut his season short. "The situation is good," Watson said. "We're in a great spot, right where we need to be. We have plenty of time to ramp up the throwing sessions and things like that, but everything is going pretty smooth." As of right now, the Browns don't have any reason to believe that Watson won't be ready for the start of the 2024 season this fall. However, the 28-year-old signal-caller isn't fully cleared yet. We'll continue to provide updates on Watson's progress this offseason. As long as he's ready to go for Week 1, he'll be in the QB1 conversation despite playing in just 12 games the last three years due to injury and suspension.
Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb (knee) is expected to begin load running in April, according to general manager Andrew Berry. The 28-year-old suffered a torn MCL and damaged ACL in the Week 2 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last season in what looked to be a potential career-ending injury. However, he is looking to bounce back and play again, but there is a lot of time before the start of next season. This will be an ongoing development worth following ahead of fantasy drafts for the 2024 campaign. Cleveland has Jerome Ford on the roster and recently signed veteran D'Onta Foreman, and if Chubb is limited upon his return, he could be utilized as a committee back moving forward.
Free-agent running back D'Onta Foreman is signing an undisclosed deal with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday, according to sources. Foreman has played for three different teams -- the Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears -- in each of the last three seasons. The 27-year-old former third-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2017 out of Texas filled a complementary role with the Bears in 2023 and had 109 carries for 425 yards (3.9 yards per attempt) and four touchdowns while adding 11 receptions for 77 yards and another score in nine games (eight starts). He could mix in more with Jerome Ford early in 2024 in Cleveland if Nick Chubb (knee) is eased in, but at best, Foreman will likely be an RB4/5 type in fantasy.
The Cleveland Browns re-signed wide receiver/kick returner James Proche II to an undisclosed deal on Tuesday. Proche, a former sixth-round selection by the Baltimore Ravens in 2020 out of SMU, didn't catch any of his five targets in 10 regular-season games (one start) in 2023 in his first year with the Browns. He did, however, return 22 points for 197 yards and one kickoff for a gain of 19 yards last year. The 27-year-old has a grand total of 25 career receptions on 45 targets for 278 yards and no touchdowns in 53 games (one start) in his four NFL seasons, so he's not going to be a factor suddenly on offense for Cleveland in 2024. Proche will, however, give the Browns another option to return kicks on special teams yet again.
