Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jack Suwinski is on the bench to start Monday's contest against the Washington Nationals. It's been a tough start to the season for the lefty-swinging outfielder, but not from a performance standpoint but rather a playing time standpoint as the Pirates have faced a wealth of left-handed starters to begin the season and will do so again on Monday in the form of MacKenzie Gore. The 25-year-old started just two of the four games against the Marlins over the weekend, although he has still racked up 15 plate appearances thanks to pinch-hitting opportunities. He is 2-for-14 (.143) with a walk to begin the season but still offers a nice combination of power and speed coming off a 26-homer, 13-steal season in the 2023 campaign.
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jack Suwinski is getting the start in left field on Saturday opposite Miami Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers. It's a rare start for the lefty-swinging Suwinski against a southpaw but the Marlins have started a lefty in each of the three games to begin this series as Pirates skipper Derek Shelton looks to get Suwinski a start. He enjoyed a fine 2023 season that saw him hit .224 with 26 homers, 74 RBI, and 13 stolen bases but he also hit just .200 with only two homers and a .608 OPS against left-handed pitching. However, he also ranked righties for an .856 OPS and big-time .271 isolated power. Add in the speed and Suwinski remains a quality fantasy asset, even on the strong side of a platoon.
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jack Suwinski went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 4-2 spring win over the Atlanta Braves. Suwinski took Charlie Morton deep in the first inning to put the Pirates on the scoreboard. It was his fourth home run of the spring. The 25-year-old is slashing .324/.361/.765 with four home runs, nine RBI, five runs scored, and a stolen base over 12 games during spring training. He is expected to be the team's everyday right fielder after the Pirates signed Michael A. Taylor on Friday to handle center field duties. Suwinski slashed .224/.339/.454 with 26 home runs, 74 RBI, 63 runs, and 13 stolen bases over 534 plate appearances in 2023. Suwinski has power/speed potential, making him a high-upside pick if fantasy managers can withstand his low batting average at his current NFBC ADP of 230.
A day after hitting his first home run of the spring, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jack Suwinski went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout in Wednesday's 6-4 Grapefruit League loss to the Orioles. The lefty hitter is now 3-for-15 (.200) in spring action with a home run and a double. More concerningly, he's also struck out six times, so managers hoping he would bring his K% down in 2024 may be disappointed. If he hits 26 home runs again and maintains his 2023 walk rate of 14.0%, they also may not care. RotoBaller ranks the 25-year-old at 220 overall, ahead of his NFBC ADP of 236.
