Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick was optioned to Triple-A on Thursday after a prolonged stretch of ineffectiveness at the plate, going 4-for-42 (.095) since July 31. For the season, McCormick was slashing .192/.256/.292 with a .245 wOBA and 57 wRC+. The 29-year-old will look to get back on track at Triple-A Sugar Land while veteran journeyman Ben Gamel will take over in right field, along with utilityman Mauricio Dubon and the recently acquired Jason Heyward. Gamel has been surprisingly productive since getting regular at-bats beginning on August 22, going 10-for-23 (.435) with a pair of doubles, two RBI, and four runs scored in seven games, collecting at least one hit in all six of those games in which started. If McCormick can find his groove again, perhaps he could be a factor for the Astros in the postseason, but for fantasy, his season is over.
Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick picked up two hits in Wednesday afternoon's win over the division-rival Oakland Athletics, walloping his fourth home run of the season. McCormick connected for a solo homer off Athletics left-hander JP Sears to center field, extending the Astros' lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning. 2024 has been a different year than the 2023 breakout we saw from the 29-year-old outfielder, who has fallen off the radar in mixed fantasy leagues by slashing a weak .211/.277/.325 with four round-trippers, 21 RBI, 22 runs scored, and seven stolen bases over 166 at-bats.
Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick went 3-for-3 with a pair of solo home runs, a stolen base, and three total runs scored in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles. He took Corbin Burnes deep in the fifth inning to give the Astros a 4-1 lead. The 29-year-old later smashed another solo shot off Bryan Baker in the bottom of the eighth inning for the second long ball of the game. The 29-year-old had his best game of the season and is now slashing .225/.286/.358 over 133 plate appearances in 2024. McCormick has collected a hit in three of his last five games and can be used as a streamer while swinging a hot bat.
Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run in Saturday's 13-5 loss to the Tigers. It was McCormick's first home run of the season and the three RBI account for 25% of his RBI total on the season (12). It has been a disappointing season for the 29-year-old after hitting .273 with 22 home runs, 19 stolen bases, and posting a 133 wRC+ last season. The right-handed hitter has tallied a .209-1-12-10-3 line through 36 games this season with a .255 wOBA and 64 wRC+. Until he heats up, McCormick will be off the fantasy radar in redraft leagues.
Houston Astros first baseman Jon Singleton, outfielder Chas McCormick and catcher Yainer Diaz are all resting on Saturday against the visiting Minnesota Twins. Jose Abreu will start at first base and bat eighth, Mauricio Dubon will play left and hit seventh, and Victor Caratini will do the catching and fill out the nine-hole for Houston against Twins right-hander Joe Ryan. None of Houston's lineup replacements have a ton of DFS upside in the bottom third of the batting order against a tough pitcher. Now that Abreu is back from the minors, the 32-year-old lefty-hitting Singleton is going to find himself on the bench more often. In three games since returning to the big leagues, the struggling Abreu has two hits and an RBI in 10 plate appearances. The veteran slugger is now hitting just .111 (9-for-81) on the year and is still searching for his first homer.
