Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (shoulder), who has been dealing with shoulder fatigue in spring training, has been receiving daily treatment while continuing to throw off flat ground to maintain his release point. Behind the scenes, he's doing strengthening and stability exercises, recovery work and cupping to speed up his recovery. If his progress continues, he expects to throw a bullpen session by early next week. Because of his delay in camp, it's clear he won't be fully ramped up by Opening Day on March 28. Manoah had a dreadful 2023 season, posting a 5.87 ERA in 87 1/3 innings. Those hoping he could bounce back this year might already be abandoning those hopes. With both Manoah and Kevin Gausman dealing with shoulder issues, both Bowden Francis and Mitch White are the leading candidates to open the year in Toronto's starting rotation.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (shoulder) continues to play catch in camp, but there is no timeline for his return to a mound. Manoah, who had a disastrous 2023 campaign while being demoted to the minors two different times, has been dealing with right-shoulder soreness in spring training and is now unlikely to be in the team's Opening Day starting rotation. Arm issues could have been partly to blame for the 26-year-old's collapse a season ago, too, so it's bad news to see him dealing with more arm trouble before the start of the 2024 regular season. It doesn't mean that Manoah won't be ready at some point in April, although this setback certainly makes him a much less attractive late-round value pick as a bounce-back candidate for the Jays.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah is still experiencing shoulder soreness. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Thursday but is not yet ready to work off of a mound. The 26-year-old was roughed up by the Tigers in his lone spring outing to this point as he allowed four earned runs on three hits, one walk, and most concerningly three hit batters. His struggles with control were at the root of his disastrous 2023 season as he posted a 5.87 ERA on the back of a bloated 14.2% BB% across 19 starts in the big leagues. He was sent to the team's Dunedin, Florida complex to find his game before unsuccessfully returning. He also refused to report to Triple-A Buffalo. He currently lines up as the team's fifth starter but his fantasy value has obviously taken a massive hit despite a projected bounce-back to decent form by ATC in 2024.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (shoulder) played some catch in camp on Monday, and the team will determine a plan for him going forward based on how he feels afterwards. Manoah was scratched from his Grapefruit League start over the weekend due to right-shoulder soreness. It makes the 26-year-old a question mark for the team's Opening Day starting rotation now. Manoah's fantasy value is down considerably after a disastrous 2023 campaign in which he was demoted to the minors twice and also dealt with arm issues. It doesn't help that he's now dealing with a shoulder injury in spring training, which could very well delay the start of his 2024 season. Stay tuned for more updates on Manoa's next step in camp.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (shoulder) experienced some right-shoulder soreness during his last bullpen session in camp and will not make his scheduled Grapefruit League start on Sunday as a result. Manoah had an MRI exam on Friday that didn't show any structural damage, though, and the team is considering him day-to-day. It doesn't sound too serious, but this should raise more eyebrows than normal after Manoah's disastrous 2023 campaign when he also dealt with arm issues and was demoted to the minors twice. The 26-year-old wasn't sharp in his spring opener on Tuesday, either, hitting three batters in 1 2/3 innings. A bounce-back could be coming if Manoah is healthy and mentally right, but he's currently outside of RotoBaller's top-100 rankings for starting pitchers.
