Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Alek Manoah (shoulder) threw a three-inning simulated game in Florida on Tuesday. "He did really well," manager John Schneider said. Schneider also said the next step will "probably" be for Manoah to pitch in a game with Single-A Dunedin on Sunday, when he will likely throw four innings and add "at least 15 pitches or so" to what he has thrown. The big right-hander was limited to one appearance of spring ball before experiencing soreness in his right shoulder, giving up four runs in 1 2/3 innings. It sounds like Manoah is progressing well and could return to Toronto's rotation in late April after a couple of rehab starts in the next few weeks, but he's not at all a must-stash fantasy asset after stumbling to a 5.87 ERA, 1.74 WHIP, and 79:59 K:BB over 87 1/3 frames last year. In the interim, Bowden Francis will hold streaming consideration in the appropriate matchups.
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that right-hander Alek Manoah (shoulder) will throw a three-inning simulated game on Tuesday against minor-leaguers. Manoah was only able to pitch in one spring training game due to right-shoulder soreness, but he threw 34 pitches in two innings during a simulated game last Wednesday and will continue to ramp up as he tries to rejoin Toronto's starting rotation. The 26-year-old should have a rotation spot waiting for him when he's fully healthy, but he may not have a long leash after being demoted to the minors twice in 2023 while posting a nightmarish 5.87 ERA and 1.74 WHIP with 59 walks and 79 strikeouts in 19 starts and 87 1/3 innings. At best, Manoah is a stash candidate in deep-mixed leagues as he nears activation from the IL.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (shoulder) is likely to start the season on the injured list, according to manager John Schneider. Manoah threw 34 pitches in two simulated innings on Wednesday, and his next steps will depend on how he feels after Wednesday's session as the team looks to continue building him up. The 26-year-old doesn't have any structural damage in his right shoulder, but starting the year on the IL is another setback after he had an absolutely disastrous 2023 campaign. Manoah's command completely deserted him last year, which led to him being demoted to the minors two separate times. There was lots of optimism from the Blue Jays that he'd be able to bounce back in 2024, but the fact is that Manoah won't be guaranteed a rotation spot once he comes off the IL if he continues to pitch poorly.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session in camp on Friday. Manoah's live BP session on Friday will be the first time facing hitters since he came down with right-shoulder soreness at the beginning of March. The 26-year-old doesn't have any structural damage in his arm, which is good news, but he's going to start the 2024 regular season on the injured list. Given his disastrous 2023 campaign in which he was sent to the minors two different times, Manoah's fantasy stock is way down after he was third in the American League Cy Young voting in 2022. He could still bounce back from his disastrous 2023 season once he's able to return from his shoulder injury, but fantasy managers in standard 12-team leagues can avoid him for now.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a side bullpen session in camp on Tuesday. It's an important step for Manoah, as it will be his first time throwing off a mound this spring since he reported soreness in his right shoulder earlier this month. The good news is that the 26-year-old doesn't have any structural damage in his arm, but the bad news is this is a setback he really couldn't afford after a disastrous 2023 season in which he was demoted to the minors two different times. Manoah will begin the year on the injured list, and there's no timetable for when he'll be able to rejoin the team's starting rotation to make his season debut. Those that were considering Manoah as a low-cost, bounce-back candidate in 2024 might want to look elsewhere for now.
