Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud connected with wide receiver Stefon Diggs for two touchdowns in a 29-27 victory in Week 1 over the Indianapolis Colts. The former Bills receiver caught all six of his targets for a meager 33 yards but turned two high-quality red zone targets into scores, including a two-yard connection with 4:42 to play that proved to be the game-winner. Most importantly for fantasy managers, Stroud distributed the ball fairly evenly to Houston's top three receivers. Even with the addition of Diggs, Nico Collins drew eight targets and Tank Dell earned seven, showing there is a path in which all three remain starting lineup fixtures. The 10th-year pro will look to carry the momentum into Week 2 when the Texans play host to the Chicago Bears.
Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs made his presence felt in Saturday's preseason game against the New York Giants, catching a 9-yard pass from C.J. Stroud for a first down in Houston's 28-10 victory. Although Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowler acquired from the Buffalo Bills, only had one reception, it was special as it was his first in a Texans uniform. His brief appearance demonstrated that he is already developing a strong rapport with Stroud. During the 15 snaps Stroud played, Diggs was on the field for 11, while starting receivers Nico Collins and Tank Dell were on for 13 and 8 snaps, respectively. Collins is expected to lead in target and snap share, with Dell likely serving as the big-play threat. The question remains whether there will be enough targets left for Diggs to justify his current ADP in fantasy drafts.
Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud and wide receiver Stefon Diggs are among the team's healthy starters that will play in the second preseason contest on Friday on the road against the hosting Pittsburgh Steelers. Stroud and the rest of the starting offense were held out of last week's Hall of Fame game against the Chicago Bears, but they'll get some action in the second preseason game. The 22-year-old Stroud and the rest of the starters that play on Friday will likely only play for a couple of drives, at the most, but it will give us our first look at his connection with new wideout Diggs in a game setting. Stroud's marvelous first NFL season in 2024 has vaulted him into midrange QB1 status in fantasy circles, especially after the addition of Diggs this offseason. Diggs, meanwhile, will see his fantasy stock fall in a new environment in which he'll have more competition for targets.
Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs (undisclosed) missed Wednesday's practice and likely won't play in Friday's preseason game against the hosting Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium. Diggs sustained another undisclosed injury after having the wind knocked out of him on Tuesday at practice, but the issue is not expected to be a long-term problem. The 30-year-old All-Pro started hot in the first half of 2023 but took a steep downturn during the second half of the season as the alpha target with the Buffalo Bills, and he'll now share quarterback C.J. Stroud's targets with star wideouts Nico Collins and Tank Dell as well as safety valve Dalton Schultz in 2024. Diggs will have to overcome a likely drop in opportunity with efficiency to remain in WR1/2 conversations this fall, as he's unlikely to produce a fourth straight 100-catch season in his new digs.
The Houston Texans acquired wide receiver Stefon Diggs in a big trade this offseason from the Buffalo Bills, but after trading for him, the Texans voided the final three seasons of his contract. Diggs will play the 2024 season on a one-year deal worth $22.5 million, so it's essentially an experimental year in his first year in Houston. The 30-year-old could land an extension if he fits well in Houston and remains productive, but it will be interesting to see if the Texans work to reach a new deal with him at some point this season or if they wait until the offseason to assess the situation. Diggs will be motivated to produce in 2024 and moves to another potent offense, although he'll have more competition for targets among Nico Collins, Tank Dell and Dalton Schultz. He'll have a lower fantasy ceiling but should still see enough volume to make him worth a look as a low-end WR2/high-end WR3 in fantasy.
