The San Francisco 49ers signed veteran kicker Matthew Wright on Tuesday to replace the injured Jake Moody (ankle), who is expected to miss multiple weeks after suffering a high-ankle sprain in the Week 5 loss to the division-rival Arizona Cardinals, according to a source. Wright will make his debut with the 49ers this Thursday night against the division-rival Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field. Before signing him, the 49ers also worked out kickers Randy Bullock, Riley Patterson, Anders Carlson and Matt Coghlin. For now, fantasy managers that were riding Moody will have to go in another direction. The 28-year-old Wright is unlikely to be as reliable as Moody, but he could at least be a viable streaming option in this strong Niners offense. Wright has a career 85.1% success rate on his 47 field-goal attempts in his four seasons in the NFL with the Steelers, Jaguars, Chiefs and Panthers.
Free-agent kicker Matthew Wright signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced on X on Wednesday. Wright went undrafted after his final season at UCF in 2018 and has spent time with eight NFL organizations, including three stints with the Steelers. In 20 NFL games, the 28-year-old has connected on 40 of his 47 field goal attempts and 35 of his 37 extra point tries. In all likelihood, veteran kicker Chris Boswell, who has been with Pittsburgh since 2015, will remain the starter. If Wright surprisingly wins the kicking job this offseason, he could have streaming viability in 2024 fantasy football.
Carolina Panthers kicker Matthew Wright, who was elevated to the active roster on Saturday, will serve as the team's primary kicker versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 18. The decision to elevate and activate Wright is a direct result of Eddy Pineiro (hamstring) missing Sunday's regular-season finale. Wright attempted 33 kicks last year but hasn't registered a snap in 2023. That will presumably change this week, though he remains off the fantasy radar given the Panthers' ongoing offensive struggles.
