Minnesota Vikings tight end Johnny Mundt caught two of three targets for just 12 yards during Sunday's win over the San Francisco 49ers. Mundt has been operating as the Vikings' top tight end with T.J. Hockenson (knee) sidelined, but he has left a lot to be desired from a fantasy football perspective. With just four catches and 27 yards through two games, Mundt has lost most of his fantasy relevance and can be left on waivers heading into Week 3 against the Houston Texans.
Minnesota Vikings tight end Johnny Mundt is penciled in as the backup tight end heading into the Week 1 matchup against the New York Giants. The 29-year-old will likely be the second string option for a few weeks while T.J. Hockenson (knee) recovers from injury. Josh Oliver is listed as the starter, but the two of them could split up the role. However, neither of them are likely to see a significant role with wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison being the primary options on offense. Mundt has finished with less than 20 receptions in each of his last two seasons. He can be ignored in fantasy formats for Week 1, but could be an option if Oliver goes down.
According to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, tight end Johnny Mundt has agreed to a new deal with the Vikings. The 29-year-old began his career with the Rams but spent the last two years in Minnesota. In 79 regular season games, he amassed 46 catches for 405 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately, that type of production won't earn him a place on most fantasy rosters, considering his presence is more crucial as a member of the special teams unit.
Minnesota Vikings tight end Johnny Mundt had an elevated role yet again in the Week 18 regular season finale against the Detroit Lions on Sunday with T.J. Hockenson (knee) out. The 29-year-old had season-highs in catches (five) and receiving yards (58) while drawing six targets. His 58 receiving yards finished second on the team behind receiver Justin Jefferson's 192 yards. In Week 17, Mundt had four catches for 39 yards and his first touchdown of the year. Fellow tight end Josh Oliver also had two receptions for 31 yards in Sunday's 30-20 loss. Mundt will be venturing into free agency this March as he heads into his eighth season in the NFL. He'll be competing for a backup role with whichever organization he ends up signing with. Mundt had 17 catches for a career-high 172 yards and one touchdown in 17 games in 2023.
