Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is being suspended for two games for violating the league's performance-enhancing substances policy, according to league sources. The policy violation is related to him using a prescribed medication without having a valid therapeutic use exemption, according to sources. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is reporting that Garoppolo is headed for his release after the news. Even if the 32-year-old wasn't suspended, he likely would have been released this offseason anyway after being benched for rookie Aidan O'Connell in 2023. The Raiders will avoid having to pay him an $11.25 million roster bonus if they cut him before March 17. Jimmy G threw for 1,205 yards, seven TDs and nine interceptions in seven games (six starts) in his first and last year in Vegas.
When asked if he expected Los Angeles Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett (illness) to be back with the team in 2024, head coach Sean McVay said, "You know, I don't know that. I think that's a conversation for another time. I think he's doing better but I wouldn't be in a position to answer that accurately right now." Bennett, who was taken in the fourth round of last year's draft after winning back-to-back National Championships with Georgia, wasn't active for a single game in his rookie season. He spent the whole year on the Non-Football Illness list for undisclosed reasons, causing the Rams to cycle between backup QBs behind starter Matthew Stafford. McVay said Bennett is doing better, but there's a chance he could miss all of next year, too.
Los Angeles Rams tight end Tyler Higbee (knee) tore both his ACL and MCL and will require surgery after taking a brutal low hit from Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph in Sunday night's wild-card playoff loss, according to head coach Sean McVay. There is no timeline for Higbee's return to on-field work, but McVay suspects that Higbee could be a candidate for the Physically Unable to Perform list in the summer during training camp. We'd be very surprised if Higbee is ready for the start of the 2024 regular season, which means that Davis Allen and Brycen Hopkins will most likely open the year splitting tight end reps for the Rams on game days. On top of his injury in the playoffs, Higbee had a disappointing regular season with 47 catches on 70 targets for 495 yards and only two touchdowns.
Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams (hand) had successful surgery on Tuesday to fix a broken bone in his hand, according to head coach Sean McVay. Williams broke a bone in his hand in Sunday night's one-point wild-card loss to the Detroit Lions, but he'll have plenty of time to heal up before the start of the 2024 regular season. The 23-year-old moved into a starting role in LA's backfield in Week 2 of the 2023 campaign after the Rams traded Cam Akers away. Williams had a career year, carrying the ball 228 times for 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns while also logging 32 receptions (48 targets) for 206 yards and three more scores in just 12 regular-season games played. He could have more competition for touches in 2024 in the Rams' backfield, but Williams should remain the lead back, which will give him at least high-end RB2 upside in fantasy drafts.
Los Angeles Rams tight end Tyler Higbee (knee) suffered a torn ACL on a brutal low hit by Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph in Sunday's wild-card loss, according to a source after results of Higbee's MRI came back. He'll now face a big challenge to be ready for the start of next season. "I don't have no intention to hurt no body and or harm their career," Joseph wrote on social media. The 31-year-old is now highly unlikely to be ready for the start of the 2024 regular season, and Davis Allen and Brycen Hopkins should be the top two candidates that could benefit from bigger pass-catching roles at the position in LA. In his eighth year with the Rams in 2023, Higbee caught 47 of 70 targets for 495 yards and only two touchdowns in 15 games. With rookie receiver Puka Nacua breaking out immediately, it was hard for Higbee to be much more than a touchdown-dependent, low-end TE1/high-end TE2 in fantasy.
