Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was active in Saturday night's preseason loss to the hosting Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium, hauling in his lone pass for seven yards in the defeat. Kelce's cameo on Saturday against the Jaguars saw him work with the first-team offense during a scoring drive in the first quarter, hooking up with quarterback Patrick Mahomes for a seven-yard pickup. 2023 was a tale of two halves for Kelce, who looked as spry as ever during the first half of the season before his production tapered off down the stretch of the year. The 34-year-old future Hall of Famer kicked things into high gear during the postseason, however, averaging eight catches for 88.8 yards with three total touchdowns over four playoff appearances. He may no longer be the undisputed top TE1 in the game with so much talent at the position around him at this stage of his career, but Kelce is a safe choice in the early rounds of fantasy drafts.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes looked sharp in limited action in Saturday night's preseason defeat to the hosting Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium, completing three of his four passing for 27 yards in the loss. Mahomes made a cameo on Saturday against Jacksonville, leading a scoring drive in the first quarter before his evening came to an end. After posting a career-low 4.5% touchdown rate and a career-worst 14 interceptions across 16 appearances last season, the 28-year-old three-time Super Bowl MVP is a clear positive regression candidate for 2024. While Mahomes' supporting cast looks much improved from what the Chiefs fielded in Week 1 of last year, Marquise Brown (shoulder) went down with a shoulder injury in this one, while Rashee Rice remains at risk of getting suspended at some point this year. All in all, Mahomes is a surefire top-shelf QB1 pick in the early rounds of fantasy drafts this summer.
Kansas City Chiefs running back Keaontay Ingram chipped in a team-high four carries in Saturday night's preseason defeat to the hosting Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium, rushing for 12 yards in the loss. His longest carry went for 10 yards, and he wasn't targeted in the passing game on Saturday evening against the Jaguars. Ingram is one of three Chiefs' backs battling for the top backup role behind workhorse starter Isiah Pacheco, but veteran Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Deneric Prince, who has worked as KC's No. 2 back in training camp, figure to have a leg up on him. The 24-year-old former sixth-round pick has rushed for just 2.2 yards per carry over 62 rushing attempts for his career, so he's no guarantee to make the roster this fall. Ingram will look to do more with his touches in next Saturday's preseason game against the visiting Detroit Lions.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown (shoulder) left Saturday night's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after catching his only target for 11 yards. Patrick Mahomes rolled right and fired a frozen rope at Brown that he successfully converted for a first down, but Brown got up and immediately signaled to his sideline before trotting off the field. It appeared that he landed on his shoulder as he was driven to the ground, and Kansas City designated him as questionable to return. The Chiefs' starters were only slated to play the opening frame regardless, but as of now -- there has been no further update on the veteran wide receiver. This remains a situation to monitor. Brown is the WR32 in Yahoo! ADP and the first Chiefs wideout off the board.
The New England Patriots are releasing wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster on Friday, according to a source. The writing was on the wall all offseason after the Patriots snagged rookie wideouts Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker in April's NFL draft. Smith-Schuster was a non-factor for the Patriots last year, even after Kendrick Bourne (knee) tore his ACL, finishing with just 29 catches on 47 targets for 260 yards and one touchdown in 11 games (seven starts). The 27-year-old wasn't targeted at all in the team's preseason opener on Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers while playing 11 offensive snaps. He'll look to latch on with another organization before the start of the 2024 regular season, but even if he does, he'll likely be off the fantasy radar. The release of Smith-Schuster is good news for Jalen Reagor and KJ Osborn as they look for roles in New England's receiving corps.
