The Kansas City Chiefs released former Clemson star wide receiver Justyn Ross on Tuesday, according to sources. The Chiefs let go of both Ross and Kadarius Toney on Tuesday as they trim their final roster down to 53 players. The addition of veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster to the receiving corps didn't help their causes to open the year on the active roster. Ross went undrafted out of Clemson last year and played sparingly in his first year in the NFL, catching just six of 11 targets for 53 yards and no touchdowns in 10 games played (one start). The Chiefs probably won't have Marquise Brown (shoulder) for the start of the season and are bracing for an eventual suspension for Rashee Rice later in the year, but they also have rookie Xavier Worthy, Skyy Moore, Justin Watson, Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman on their current roster at wideout.
The New England Patriots waived quarterback Bailey Zappe on Tuesday, according to a source. Zappe became the odd-man out in New England's QB room leading up to the start of the 2024 regular season after rookie sixth-rounder Joe Milton III showed enough in training camp and the preseason to earn the QB3 role behind first-round rookie Drake Maye and veteran Jacoby Brissett. Maye and Brissett are still competing for the starting gig under center with less than two weeks to go before Week 1 kicks off. Zappe, 25, should find a new home sooner than later as QB depth. He was initially a fourth-round selection by the Pats in 2022 out of Western Kentucky. In his two years in Boston, he completed only 63.2% of his 304 pass attempts for 2,053 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 14 games (eight starts).
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown (shoulder) was present at Monday's training camp practice but wasn't participating on the field. Brown suffered a sternoclavicular injury in the team's preseason opener on Aug. 10 and was given an initial timeline of four to six weeks, so his availability for the Week 1 regular-season opener on Thursday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens is very much in question. At this point, it would be a surprise if the 27-year-old suited up. However, barring a setback, Brown should make his KC debut at some point in September. His injury has made both rookie Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice more attractive in fantasy drafts. The injury to Brown has surely put a damper on his fantasy value entering the year, but he's still worth a late-round flier as a WR4/flex. When healthy, he could be one of quarterback Patrick Mahomes' top targets.
The Denver Broncos are expected to move on from veteran running back Samaje Perine, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. The organization is engaged in trade conversations, but if they do not reach a deal before Tuesday's 4 p.m. EDT roster cutdown deadline, he could be released. This move was expected by many following the acquisition of former Notre Dame running back Audric Estime in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The Denver backfield is crowded with Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin, and Estime, so Perine has been viewed as the odd man out. Although Perine is unlikely to have a ton of fantasy value somewhere else, he could affect another running back and negatively impact their standing on the depth chart.
Free-agent wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster is heading back to Kansas City for a reunion with Andy Reid and the Chiefs. According to Jordan Schultz, the reigning Super Bowl champs are adding the seven-year veteran to their receiving corps. Smith-Schuster last played for the Chiefs in 2022, when they beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl for the first half of their back-to-back wins. Last year, the 27-year-old experienced the worst season of his career with the New England Patriots, when he caught just 29 of 47 targets for 260 yards and one touchdown across 11 appearances. He was cut by the Patriots this offseason, which led to him being available for the Chiefs to scoop up. It's unclear how many opportunities he'll see, but the chemistry with quarterback Patrick Mahomes is already there. He'll still have to compete with Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, and eventually Marquise Brown (shoulder) for targets.
