The Miami Dolphins and tight end Jonnu Smith agreed upon a two-year, $10 million contract on Thursday according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Smith was released by the Atlanta Falcons earlier in the offseason but wasn't looking for work for very long as he will now join an explosive Miami offense. The tight end position has not been heavily targeted since Mike McDaniel took over as the team's head coach but the Dolphins invested a significant amount of money to bring him to town, so Smith should open the year as the team's clear-cut starter. He can be tentatively considered a low-end TE2 heading into 2024.

Smith is able to get an early start on free agency after the Atlanta Falcons released the 28-year-old last week. In lots of two-tight end sets under former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith in 2023, Smith set career-highs in his first and only season in Atlanta in receptions (50), targets (70) and receiving yards (582) while scoring three touchdowns in 17 games (six starts). The Dolphins haven't really used tight ends all that much in head coach Mike McDaniels' offense and already have Durham Smythe around, so Smith would be hard-pressed to come close to matching last year's totals if he signs in Miami.

The Atlanta Falcons are releasing tight end Jonnu Smith on Tuesday, according to a source. Smith will be on the open market this offseason after catching 50 passes for 532 yards and three touchdowns on 70 targets in 17 games (six starts) in his lone season in Atlanta in 2023. The Falcons traded for Smith before the 2023 season, but that was with the old coaching staff. Now that a new coaching staff is in place, more specifically with new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson running the offense, the Falcons aren't going to rely as much on two tight-end sets in 2024, making the 28-year-old Smith and his $6.5 million non-guaranteed salary expendable. Smith will be hard-pressed to match his career-highs in 2024 with another team.
