The Chicago White Sox quietly engaged in brief contract-extension talks with ace left-hander Garrett Crochet, but with no optimism towards reaching an agreement, the White Sox intend to trade him by the July 30 deadline. Chicago has had 15 teams calling to express interest in Crochet, who is making just $800,000 and is under team control through 2026. He has already thrown 94 1/3 innings as a first-year starter in 2024, 21 more than his entire career total entering this year, and the White Sox and Crochet already have a firm plan in place to greatly limit his workload the rest of this season. It's possible that a team acquiring him may have to offer a contract extension for him to lift his innings restrictions in the second half because of potential injury risk. The Dodgers already made an offer for Crochet, but it was quickly rejected. Chicago is seeking young prospects with enormous upside.

"We're going to start dwindling his workload down a little bit, and we'll manage that correctly," manager Pedro Grifol said. "But it's not something we're going to put out and say, 'Here's what we're doing,' because nothing in this game is black and white." The 25-year-old southpaw has been the team's best pitcher in 2024 and one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he's already up to 94 1/3 innings, 40 more than his career-high set in 2021. Crochet made his first big-league start on Opening Day after having Tommy John surgery in April of 2022. He leads the American League with 130 K's and is also 5-2 with a 1.53 ERA in his last 11 starts. Fantasy managers must continue to run him out there, but just be aware that his pitch counts are going to start dwindling as the season progresses.

Grifol didn't want to lay out plan, as it's flexible depending on how Crochet is feeling, and how economical he is with pitches on a given day. It's disappointing for fantasy managers to hear to this about one of baseball's rising pitching stars, but it was tough to bypass given that Crochet entered the season with 73 innings of major-league experience and has already logged 94 1/3 frames with a league-high 130 strikeouts for the White Sox in 2024 alone. It makes the fire-balling 25-year-old left-hander something of a sell-high fantasy player in redraft leagues, but Crochet does have a great chance to keep the good times rolling in a favorable matchup for Saturday's scheduled start against the visiting Colorado Rockies.
