The New York Giants experimented with rookie tight end Theo Johnson in the first-team offense on Monday. It was a fairly uneventful practice, with the Giants installing early-down packages, but that allowed the team to get a closer look at Johnson. New York selected the 23-year-old out of Penn State in the fourth round of this past spring's NFL draft, and he'll compete with Daniel Bellinger in the tight end room for quarterback Daniel Jones' targets in the short and intermediate levels of the field in the New York offense. The G-Men have struggled to find consistent tight end play for almost a decade, and Johnson appears to be in the mix for the starting role. With that said, Johnson's appeal is more pronounced in dynasty setups in the aftermath of Darren Waller's retirement but should see his role grow as the season rolls on.
New York Giants rookie tight end Theo Johnson (hip), who should have plenty of opportunity in his first year in the NFL given the retirement of Darren Waller, passed his physical and was activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list on Sunday. The 23-year-old fourth-rounder will now get going as he tries to learn the offense heading into his first year in the NFL. Fantasy managers in single-year formats shouldn't expect much from Johnson right away, especially with quarterback Daniel Jones (knee) coming off an ACL tear, but he's not a bad dynasty/keeper stash. Johnson will be competing with Daniel Bellinger as the team's top pass-catching tight end in 2024. The Penn State alum didn't put up production that raised eyebrows in college, but he could be a red-zone asset right away because of his 6-foot-6, 259-pound frame.
On Wednesday, New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen said that Theo Johnson (hip) should be practicing soon. He was placed on the PUP list last week and with a wide-open tight end room following the retirement of Darren Waller, Daniel Bellinger is in line to begin the season as the top tight end with blocking tight ends Jack Stoll and Chris Manhertz also on the roster. As a fourth-round rookie, Johnson looks to compete with Bellinger to get reps at the position once Johnson gets into camp. Johnson shouldn't be on your radar during fantasy drafts but could work his way into the Giants' rotation depending on his camp and preseason production.
New York Giants tight end Theo Johnson (hip) has been placed on the physically unable to perform list, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com. The Giants "hope" it's not a long-term problem for the rookie. Johnson caught 34 passes for 341 yards and seven touchdowns at Penn State last season, prompting the Giants to select him 107th overall in April's draft. It was a timely addition for New York's NFC franchise given that veteran Darren Waller retirement less than two months later. The Giants' current tight end depth chart is headlined by Johnson and Daniel Bellinger. Johnson may face an uphill battle to open 2024 as the Giants' No. 1 tight end given his injury and unfamiliarity with New York's system. This makes Bellinger the more intriguing option in redraft fantasy leagues, though Johnson has the edge in dynasty formats.
Now that tight end Darren Waller officially announced his retirement over the weekend, New York Giants tight ends Daniel Bellinger and rookie Theo Johnson are set to compete for primary pass-catching duties at the position in 2024. Johnson was a fourth-rounder this year, while Bellinger was a fourth-round selection in 2022. But tight ends are physical, but Bellinger has the clear experience edge, having caught 55 of 63 targets for 523 yards and two touchdowns in 29 games in his first two NFL seasons. However, Bellinger's production has left a lot to be desired in fantasy in terms of upside, leaving the door open for Johnson to impress and earn more work as his rookie campaign rolls on this fall. In a suspect Giants offense with a quarterback coming off a torn ACL last year, neither Bellinger nor Johnson represent anything more than a low-end TE2 in fantasy.
