San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joshua Dobbs assumed second-half quarterback duties in a 17-13 loss at the Tennessee Titans on Saturday night. Dobbs, who raised some eyebrows in 2023 with the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings, signed with San Francisco in March to back up starter Brock Purdy. Dobbs finished the night completing 14 of 20 passing attempts for 146 yards and one interception to go with one rushing attempt, which went for a six-yard touchdown. The 29-year-old former aerospace engineering major looked mostly sharp, though he was sacked once for a 15-yard loss. Dobbs will go undrafted in fantasy leagues, but would likely be worth a waiver-wire look if Purdy were to miss time, especially with the rushing upside he showed last season and the potent offense he'd be running.
Following an up-and-down 2023 season, veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs signed a one-year, $2.25 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers this offseason. The 2017 fourth-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of Tennessee saw the most action of his career last season, playing in 13 games with the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings. Overall, he threw for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions and ran for 421 yards and six scores on the ground. He is listed alongside Brandon Allen in the QB2 role on the team's first unofficial depth chart, and the position battle is worth monitoring in two-QB and Superflex leagues. If Dobbs wins the job, he should be stashed in deep versions of those formats, as he would likely have at least QB2 fantasy value if Brock Purdy had to miss any time. Dobbs has fantasy-friendly rushing upside, and he'd get to throw to a loaded skill group in the Bay.
The San Francisco 49ers reached an agreement on an undisclosed one-year deal with free-agent veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs on Monday, according to his agent, Mike McCartney. Dobbs will give the Niners more depth behind starter Brock Purdy after Sam Darnold signed with the Minnesota Vikings this offseason. The 29-year-old Dobbs was the early season feel-good story in the NFL last year with the Arizona Cardinals and Vikings, but he was ultimately benched in Minnesota after they acquired him in a trade. In 13 games played (12 starts), the Steelers' former fourth-round selection in 2017 out of Tennessee completed 62.8% of his pass attempts for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Dobbs also added six rushing scores. He should be considered the favorite for backups duties over Brandon Allen.
