Free-agent kicker Brayden Narveson was claimed by the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday afternoon, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. In a corresponding move, the Packers released kicker Greg Joseph. Narveson was an undrafted rookie and spent the preseason playing in Tennessee and went 6-for-7 on his field-goal attempts. This was surprising, as the Packers waived Anders Carlson on Tuesday, suggesting that Joseph had won the starting job. As a result, fantasy managers should expect Narveson to now serve as the new starting kicker in Green Bay. While the NC State product may be a risky investment late in drafts, he should have ample opportunities to score fantasy points kicking in a potent offense and has flashed potential by hitting a 59-yard field goal during the preseason.
Green Bay Packers rookie running back MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring) avoided starting his rookie on Injured Reserve and has made the 53-man roster. Meanwhile, running back AJ Dillon (neck) landed on IR and will miss the entire 2024 season. This is a pretty big turn of events for Green Bay's backfield, as it was initially expected that Lloyd was going to miss at least the first four weeks of the season. The 23-year-old third-rounder could still be eased in to begin his first year in the NFL, but this news makes him a much more intriguing late-round flier in upcoming fantasy drafts, especially if you select starter Josh Jacobs. When healthy, Lloyd will compete with Emanuel Wilson for a change-of-pace role behind Jacobs, but Lloyd is fully expected to be Green Bay's No. 2 by the end of the year. He missed most of training camp and the preseason with hip and hamstring ailments.
The Green Bay Packers placed running back AJ Dillon (neck) on injured reserve Tuesday, and he will miss the entire 2024 season. This is a huge blow for the Packers and Dillon's fantasy managers. The 26-year-old was expected to be Green Bay's RB2 behind Josh Jacobs and have a significant role in the team's offense. Dillon had 613 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns over 15 games last season. MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring) made the 53-man roster and is expected to back up Jacobs in 2024 with Dillon sidelined.
Green Bay Packers rookie running back MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring) will likely start the season on Injured Reserve. If his recovery takes longer than expected, Green Bay could use one of their two pre-cutdown IR spots for him, allowing them to keep Josh Jacobs, AJ Dillon, and Emanuel Wilson on the initial 53-man roster. Wilson has demonstrated reliability as a third running back and can fill in when needed. By placing Lloyd on IR, he could be eligible to return after Week 4, giving him the chance to recover from his challenging hamstring injury fully. Lloyd has potential as Green Bay's future running back and could be the No. 2 option in 2024 once he's healthy. If anything happens to Jacobs this season, he's worth watching as a high-upside lottery ticket.
Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Malik Willis was traded to the Green Bay Packers for a 2025 seventh-round pick on Monday. With roster cuts underway, the Titans were able to recoup some value on Willis while also clearing a roster spot. The Titans signed Mason Rudolph this offseason and he appears to have won the backup quarterback job. Willis is already listed as the No. 2 quarterback for the Packers. The Packers did not get much out of quarterbacks Sean Clifford or Michael Pratt this preseason. With most teams carrying a maximum of three quarterbacks, either Pratt or Clifford appears to be on the chopping block. Willis gives the Packers a mobile option behind starter Jordan Love. This move does not impact fantasy football unless Love goes down due to injury. However, Willis has valuable starting experience that would be useful if Love were to miss time.
