Dallas Mavericks guard/forward Klay Thompson is ready to start another chapter after spending his entire career in Golden State. "I'm excited for a whole new chapter of my career that has a chance to be so special," said Thompson to The Dallas Morning News. "I know we can do something special." Thompson's resume includes four NBA championships and five All-Star selections. Unfortunately, he is coming off a down year, averaging 17.9 points and 38.7% shooting from behind the arc. The 34-year-old also spent time coming off the bench, which caused friction with his previous coach, Steve Kerr. But Thompson should remain in the starting lineup all year, so he could have a bounce-back year as long as he stays healthy.
Dallas Mavericks guard/forward Klay Thompson will look to reignite his career on a new squad, and the team hopes to make things "easier" on offense for him in Texas. "Obviously, the big addition was Klay," said Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban on the Roommates Show. "Just somebody who you have to face guard, who's going to make 40 percent (from three-point range), and we're hoping, you know, at Golden State, he had to always be on the move. They had that motion offense where he was always coming off screens and running. We don't do that, or not nearly as much, and sure, we'll run some of that action for him, but just standing in the corner, and standing in the wings, and just catch and shoot from Luka (Doncic and Ky (Kyrie Irving). Hopefully, his life is going to be a lot easier." Thompson faces a big adjustment in Dallas, and it will be interesting to see how things work out for him in his new surroundings.
Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson hasn't progressed with contract talks and the expectation is now that he's going to become an unrestricted free agent. According to Sam Amick and Anthony Slater of The Athletic, two teams that are interested in the four-time champ are the Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets. The Sixers have more cap space at the moment with over $60 million available and a whole team that they still have to construct. The Nuggets, on the other hand, have been shedding salary and don't seem likely to retain Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Thompson hasn't been the same impact player that he was before the major injuries, but his shooting and defense can still help a high-level team at this point.
According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, contract talks between guard Klay Thompson and Golden State are "frozen." While the Warriors have the luxury of negotiating a new deal right now, there hasn't been any movement. As a result, Slater indicated that Thompson's exit from Golden State "feels closer and more probable than ever before." The 34-year-old spent time between the starting lineup and a bench role during the 2023-24 campaign. As such, Thompson's statistical contributions regressed from a season ago, and he finished the year by averaging 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists while shooting 38.7% from behind the arc. At any rate, there are rumblings he could end up in Orlando, a team that has expressed interest. But since there "has been no traction" between both sides, other clubs with money this offseason could enter the equation.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, impending free-agent guard Klay Thompson is open to all "external options" in free agency this summer. The Warriors want him back. However, it remains to be seen how much Golden State is willing to bid for his services. But considering teams like the Orlando Magic could make Thompson a lucrative offer, his future with the Warriors is all but guaranteed. The 34-year-old averaged 17.9 points last season, his fewest since the 2012-13 campaign. He also started in just 63 of his 77 appearances after getting pulled briefly from the first five during the year. While Thompson's production is frustrating for fantasy managers, he could benefit from a change of scenery, especially if he remains in the starting lineup.
