Cincinnati Reds infielder/outfielder Spencer Steer is not in the team's starting lineup for Saturday's contest at Great American Ball Park against the division-rival Pittsburgh Pirates. With Steer taking the day off, the left-handed-hitting Will Benson will get the start in left field for the Reds and will bat ninth against Pirates rookie right-hander Jared Jones. Steer has really struggled in the month of September, batting .191 (12-for-63) with a homer, four doubles, two triples and 14 strikeouts in 18 games, so the Reds have elected to give him a day to clear his head. The 26-year-old right-handed slugger has hit just .230 (127-for-552) in 152 games this year, but he has recorded a 20-20 campaign for the first time in his career in just his third season with the Reds after falling five steals short in 2023. Benson has never faced Jones in his career and is a low-upside DFS sleeper who is hitting .189 (63-for-333) on the year.
Cincinnati Reds utilityman Spencer Steer had a solid offensive game in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Braves. Steer went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk, and a strikeout. The 26-year-old lined a seventh-inning Pierce Johnson curveball into the left-center seats to put the Reds up for good. Steer has provided useful counting stats this season but has not provided the batting average, slashing .232/.327/.419 with 20 HR, 74 runs scored, 91 RBI, and 25 stolen bases in 621 plate appearances. His low average may impact his perceived fantasy value next season, but his power-speed combination and multi-position eligibility make him a useful option.
Cincinnati Reds third baseman/outfielder Spencer Steer is taking a seat in Sunday's series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers. The 26-year-old infielder has started in each of the past 23 games and is taking a routine maintenance day. During this stretch, Steer has posted a solid .282/.394/.487 line with four home runs and a 15:19 BB:K ratio. Steer should be expected to rejoin the starting nine on Monday even as the Reds open up a three-game set against the Astros. As a result, Will Benson will join the starting nine, start in left field, and bat in the eight-hole. Benson has held a .273 AVG across the past six games and could be worth a look in DFS this afternoon as he will face Brewer right-hander Tobias Myers, who has held a 4.30 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP across his past three outings.
Cincinnati Reds super utilityman Spencer Steer had an excellent offensive night in Monday's 6-1 win over the Cardinals. Steer went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a three-run HR, a walk, a strikeout, and a stolen base. The 26-year-old launched a third-inning Sonny Gray fastball into the left-field seats and got Gray again to left-center in the fifth for his first career multi-hit game. While Steer's 18 HR, 60 runs scored, 74 RBI, and 19 stolen bases are respectable this season, his .237 batting average leaves something to be desired. Despite his average, Steer has produced enough to still be a useful fantasy contributor in all leagues.
Cincinnati Reds corner infielder/outfielder Spencer Steer is sitting out on Wednesday against the hosting Miami Marlins. With Steer getting a breather on Wednesday, Santiago Espinal will draw into the lineup in left field and will bat ninth for the Reds against Marlins right-hander Valente Bellozo. The 26-year-old Steer could probably use a little bit of a mental break, as he's recorded just one hit in his last 22 at-bats in his last six games. The poor stretch has dropped his season slash line to .226/.314/.409 in 411 at-bats. Despite the low batting average, Steer has been relevant in most fantasy leagues in 2024 because of his power/speed combination with 15 long balls, 66 RBI and 18 stolen bases. Espinal has limited DFS appeal as a sleeper in the nine-hole. The 29-year-old Dominican has eight homers and eight stolen bases on the year in 222 at-bats for Cincy.
