Cal Quantrill DVOA, Advanced Stats, & Fantasy Rankings

The Miami Marlins agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million deal with free-agent right-hander Cal Quantrill on Wednesday, a source told ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. Quantrill will give the Marlins a young and durable rotation arm who has a propensity for generating ground balls and who isn't far removed from a nice stretch with the Cleveland Guardians from 2021-22, when he went 23-8 with a combined 3.16 ERA (4.10 FIP) and 1.19 WHIP while striking out 249 and walking 94 in 336 innings over 72 appearances (54 starts). The 30-year-old was cut by the Colorado Rockies in the offseason after going 8-11 with a 4.98 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with 110 K's and a league-high 69 walks in 148 1/3 innings over 29 starts in 2024. Because of the lack of starting options in Miami, Quantrill should be part of their Opening Day rotation, giving him some appeal in NL-only fantasy formats.

The 29-year-old has pitched to a 4.63 ERA in his first year with the Rockies, though he's been hit significantly harder in the second half of the season (.930 OPS) compared to the first half (.753 OPS). Quantrill's return to the rotation will likely mean much more to the Rockies than it will to fantasy managers given's Quantrill's second half struggles and lack of strikeouts. With the season nearing its end, only managers in deeper leagues that are desperate for help should consider the Rockies' righty. Better options can be found on the waiver wire for those in need.

Quantrill is heading into the final year of salary arbitration this offseason and is expected to be a key part of Colorado's starting rotation, so they would like him going into the offseason on a high note. The 29-year-old was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday at Coors Field against the Baltimore Orioles. Even in deeper fantasy leagues, managers shouldn't be banking on Quantrill's return to close out 2024. Left-hander Ty Blach took Quantrill's rotation spot on Sunday and should stick around in the rotation for the time being.

Left-hander Ty Blach will make the start instead. Quantrill would have been a poor streaming option anyway against the Orioles in a hitter-friendly venue. It remains to be seen if the 29-year-old's injury is serious enough to put him on the injured list. He's mostly been inconsistent all year, especially in the second half, and currently has a 4.63 ERA and 1.42 WHIP while striking out 103 and walking a league-high 57 batters in 138 innings over 26 starts in his first year with the Rockies. Blach has been even worse in 18 outings (10 starts), yielding a 6.36 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and only striking out 34 in 63 2/3 frames. Stay away from Blach as a fantasy streamer.
